Reviews on the AF100

My AF100 paid for itself in less than one day. I took it on a corporate shoot for interviews and the marketing director was so very impressed with the image when previewing the shots. Before I left the location, I had a signed budget extention that paid for the camera +. Very happy with my AF100!

Our thoughts are with your colleagues in Japan.

Absolutely. I don't want to hijack this post, but want to offer my best wishes for everyone at Panasonic Japan.

I lived in Japan for two years, and its people are among the kindest and most generous I have encountered anywhere in the world.

Love the camera + 25mm Voigtlaender / Canon 50mm f/1.2. Some times it feels like I'd need surgery to separate myself from it.

It's a very nice camera and putting Voigtländer lenses on works perfect. Love them. When you expose by the tools and a decent external reference monitor you get spot on exposure and it looks resolved and very clean.

Yep. Loving the camera.

What monitor are you using?

I remember when the 35mm adapter was the thing, and everybody ( including me ) was building adapters with spinnig discs, vibrating glass, condenser lensen, microcrystiline wax and so on .. When my monstrosity was finished I thought to myself " please panasonic, save me from this! " ;)

And now we have the Af100 and I love it! I actually wasn't keen on switching from my Canon 60D but when I start contemplating the idea with onboard sound ( with live headphone montoring and levels in display ), reduced moire issues, form factor and above all focus assist, I could'nt resist. This jump made my work so much easier. I'm a happy camper!

Out of 21 Reviews from verified buyers so far on B and H photo - (5 stars being the highest rating) I counted 17 5-star reviews, 3 4 star reviews and 1 who decided to go another direction. I read through each review: Many (some of them former DLSR users) people loved the camera for it's low light capability, lens compatibilty, and the film-like images that they could obtain for relatively little cost. It seems that the AF100 has hit the right buttons for a lot of people out there.

Hey Jan,
Camera paid for itself in about a month. Clients are "digging it", my sound person said "finally" and my colorist loves the 220Mbps recorded images from my NanoFlash.
My 7D takes great pic of my kids. My HDX900 is getting heavy!!!!
See you at NAB this year.
Jim

Thanks everyone. I will sleep a little better tonight. Anyone going to be at SXSW? Headed there tomorrow. If so, maybe I will see you there.

Best,

Jan

I recently had the opportunity to help a fellow user out with b-roll using his AF(#2) and it was a real pleasure to use. Bright, clean images with rich color and very organic. I would definitely look forward to working with that camera again.
Ok, Matt?

I just wanted to share a short spot I'm working on shot on the AF101. Work in progress so not finished yet.

I think this camera can be made to look clean and look great in full HD.

Whoa, editman. That looks great.

2006 is the last time I owned a camera (Canon XL1). I didn't stop shooting but rented and worked with owner/operators. I needed a movie camera that enabled film grammar. The use of different lenses for, different feel. Shallow focus, sure, but also the ability to rack focus. So I waited. The first time I saw and HVX and an adapter I was acting in a film. I really liked the way that looked, I bought 35 mm still lenses thinking I would jump... but the light loss and all the futzing... so I waited. All this time I'm on the RED site lurking and waiting for Scarlet S35 or some version of that. Then I directed two projects with EX-1s they were nice, with the Letus, but I didn't buy anything. I acted recently in a commercial, 5D, it looked great but the sound man was inconsolable and I just couldn't get my wallet out for something with 1/8 audio input or MOS. Nah.

When I caught wind of the AF100 bells went off. Panasonic color... all manner of lens flexibility. Now I own another camera. The AF100 and I LOVE it. Now those Nikons that I bought over the past few years shine into the AF100 and the results are great! And I'm just getting started! I love the flexibility and the latitude given the operator. I love the manual aspect of it's use. To me it's a movie camera. The first one I could buy and I'm really happy about it.

Haven't been this excited about a camera since the DVX. DSLR's held no interest due to moire and ergonomics. The AF addressed those issues, and it gave me everything I was missing from my XHA1 - interchangeable lenses, the option of shallow DOF, the Panasonic color palette, and much wider dynamic range, all at the right price. The AF is best-in-class, and by class, I mean price point. Nothing else comes close at this price. At. This. Price. Need more? Pay more.

When the XHA1 came out, users on another site compiled a list of reasonable firmware upgrade requests, which the forum owner eventually hand-delivered to Canon. The people at Canon he presented this list to requested that they not be mentioned by name on the forum. They took the list with no promises to even read it. No firmware upgrade that addressed those requests ever happened. Eventually, the XHA1s came out, and addressed only a very few of them.

Having a product manager in the person of Jan to address feedback to, and getting reasonable responses, is a serious value add from Panasonic. The AF does what it said it would do. Panasonic is a solid vendor. I'm a happy camera owner.
