Return without UPC code

I bought Canon XH A1 from B&H not too long ago. As soon as I received it, I sent the rebate form out, which required me to attach the original UPC code from the box. About a week ago, I decided to return the camera. B&H approved of my return and I sent it out yesterday. And I just realized that the box did not have the UPC code (which I sent for refund earlier). Does anyone have any experience with this? What do you think will happen?

I would be very interested to know what will happen.

A lot of it depends on the terms and conditions between you and the merchant as well as the applicable State and Federal laws involved.

Your best bet is to always try and work it out amicably with the merchant.

If you purchased by credit card you have the upper hand as you can simply dispute the transaction with your credit card company IN WRITING.

This should be done as soon as you know you will not get satisfaction from the merchant but no later than 60 days from the date of the statement on which the charge appears.

In this case, you might have liability if the terms and conditions state you must return the product with the packaging in tact.

B&H seems to be a very good retailer so I would hope you can work things out together to your mutual satisfaction.

Be sure to keep us posted!

Well if you defraud someone you might have to quit your job so you can do prison time.

I think what the original poster was wondering is what will happen in this specific instance.

He said he forgot that he had removed the UPC.

O.K. he will have to see what B&H says and go from there.

Do you think I should contact B&H before the package gets there (on Tuesday) or only if they contact me after it arrives. I don't think their site mentions anything about UPC and they did not ask me if the UPC was intact when they approved of my return. I would be satisfied if the refund was cancelled, since I made an honest mistake. And what do you mean by that I have an upper hand. I did pay with the credit card, does that mean I can get full refund even if B&H doesn't agree to it. Sounds pretty unfair to them.

No... I would let them contact you. If they have any questions or problems with the return they will get back with you for sure. Just see how things progress and be honest with them if they have any questions.

If you have a legitimate dispute with a merchant your card company will back you if you follow proper procedures.

I personally would be proactive and contact B&H first. Since a UPC code is part of the package, it affects the resale value of the item since the store will not be able to sell the camera again in that box. In my experience, if this happens at a local store like Fry's, you're not going to be able to get all your money back if they allow you to return it at all. My guess is they'll require you to show proof that you halted the rebate process with Canon and then you'll have to accept a partial refund. Contacting Canon now wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Or he cold just let B&H evaluate his return and go from there.

Saves time and hassle.

B&H are pretty darn professional and have a great reputation.

I am sure they have handled this many times before.

That would be funny.

But, I don't think B&H will let it go unnoticed.

They will see it and not care or see it and call him.

I would guess they are going to call him!

But you never know???

Maybe he will get a full refund and can afford to take us out for drinks!

Well, I contacted B&H today. I first talked on live help and the guy told me that I will probably be able to return the camera, but to make sure I should call them. So, I call them up, explain the situation and the guy on the phone tells me that my return will be rejected and will be sent back to me. Meaning, I just lost the money for shipping. I tell him that I thought they would keep the camera, but cancel the rebate. And he tells me (very close to exact words): "Why do you want us to keep the camera, you will not get the money for it." I thought he was very unprofessional and quick to make judgements. When I asked him if he handled the returns himself, he said no. So, I asked him if anyone who handles returns is there and he said no. And that prettymuch ended the call. Anyway, not a good experience talking to a guy who doesn't seem to know much, but makes big assumptions. Oh, well, I guess I'll wait for them to contact me and see what happens.

Yea, B&H aren't exactly know for friendly customer service. However henryp on this board works for B&H and he was very responsive the last time I have an issue with B&H. Shoot him a PM or email and see what he says.
