Retro Cashe anyone?

I don't recall this subject coming up in the Red forums, but this is a fantastic little feature of the HVX and Firestore and the like. It is very useful for those of us doing doc work. (and those brave enough to attempt ENG on the RED). Having a cashe of 5-10 seconds in onboard ram that is tacked to the beginning of your shot once you hit the record is a VERY cool thing. Will such a creature be avail on red? I suppose it could be a function of the hard drive (as you could cache to the hard drive) but flash might be better.

Firmware upgrade?

Firmware upgrade?

If it would take them any significant amount of time to add the pre-record cache at this point in the development process then I vote to shine it for now and assuming Sarmoti is right then just upgrade the firmware later. I wonder though if it would require the inclusion of a small flash memory chip in the RedDrive units? If so, and if it was a feature they expected to implement later, then maybe they could include it in the RedDrives even if it wasn't enabled so that when the time came we could send the RedDrives back to Red for the upgrade?

Lots of speculation here. I am sure the Red Team has discussed this issue and will make a logical choice. I have a lot of faith in Stuart, Graeme, Rob and the whole Red Team.

Well, ideally you'd have a solid state device recording the loop such as an independent ram buffer (or REDRAM??). It may not be ideal to do the loop on the HDD for power, possible damage from shock and wear reasons but I still think it's probably still pretty safe with today's HDDs.

Guys pre-record is available with red flash on the red one.

What would be really clever is Gavins (Greenwalt) suggestion that they fit a 1gb flash buffer inside the red drive enclosure so that we had pre-record feature in the red drive as well. Now that would be brilliant.
