Resolution of Imported HD video

Hey all,

This is my first post on your lovly forum. :love4: Thanks in advance.

When I import video from my A1 onto my computer the file produced is at 720x480 resolution.

The images off the SD card are huge but the video is 720? What am I missing? Do I need a better program to import an retain all the quality?

I am using firewire to connect to my computer and have tried importing with iMovie, the default windows program and AVC Video Cap but they all produce the same resolution.

Thanks!

If you shot in SD mode then the video will show up as 720 x 480, you need to check that the camera is actually shooting HD. Images taken from the SD card are independently set and have nothing to do with video mode.

Hey thanks for the info. I am pretty sure I am shooting in HD but will confirm.

What do you mean when you say the images are independently set? Can you go into a bit more detail on that? Thanks again.

I mean that shooting stills to the cards are set by an independent menu, has nothing to do with what video resolution you're shooting. You can be shooting in SD and still take 1920 x 1080 picture from the card. You need to go into the Signal menu and check that the signal is HDV 24F/30F.

I just thought of another thing, check and make sure downconversion is not enabled in camera. This will take an HD signal on tape and capture it as SD.

Ok so I was shooting in HDV but it was 60i. I have changed it to 24F. Where can I check the down conversion? Thanks boss.

Ah I found it, conversion was ON. That must have been it? I assume it should be set to off. I'll try importing again. You da man Huy!

Huy - mine was set on down conversion on also. When I turned down conversion off i was unable to capture. Any ideas? My capture card is SIIG and has 400 and 800 ports (1394a and 1394b) I have the great video when looking at it on T.V. But when I try to capture it ....looks like sd at best.
I use premier pro CS4.

What do you mean about being unable to capture? Does Premiere not recognize the camera? Make sure that the playback setting on the camera and the Premiere project sequence are both HDV, a mismatch will cause the program to not recognize the camera.

Google and download HDVsplit. It's a stand alone capture utility that's much better than Premiere.

Huy...so nice to get a quick response ...thanks
I assumed the problem was a limit of the card, since I switched back the camera and it captured just fine. I never even thought about the camera needing to match the premiere settings. I will take all of your advise and check back for others.
ps - I have read many of your posts and have always been impressed with your input.

No problem, 99% of the time it's either a blown FW on the computer, a blown FW on the camera, or a mismatched playback setting. Can be a pain to diagnose but as long as you are methodical and isolate each individual factor you can quickly narrow it down.

That tells me more... I assume there must be 2 fw chip-sets on camera, since it definitely works in sd mode as I am able to capture video with down conversion on.
Will check out tonight.

I got in really late from work ...like 10:30 pm. I tried things like Huy suggested! in 10 minutes I was bringing in perfect video.
man do I owe you Huy! it even works in Premier. Gonna take your advice and just use HDVsplit though. Just tried for the fun of it.
I noticed you live close. If you ever need to borrow another XH A1 for a bigger shoot let me know. Thanks again. I have been kidding myself for years that this was normal...lol.
