I dont care about the platform as long as i can edit with Vegas. Yeah, it might sound less professional than saying. "i edit in avid or fcp", but after spending 8 years editing, Vegas is the fastest thing to edit the kind of works i do.

I used Avid and Media100 in the past, but I made the move 6 years ago to FCP and never looked back over my shoulder. Use FCP for everything from commercials to indie features.
RED #74

I'm setting up to use Macs for my film stuff, but I'm a whiz on both platforms, the only deciding factor was Final Cut Pro and Shake. I still have a lot of PC's for the fun stuff like videogames and home entertainment.

In the early going, I have to say that I am surprised with the results of this poll (54/30). Given the way some have discussed this in other threads on this forum, I'd have expected exactly the opposite results...

I didn't see the ONLY People with Red Reservations until after I voted. Anyway, I'm going to rent from IndieRentals for my feature; and our post process will be (PC) Avid Express Pro (downcoverted 480P) for our Rough Cut, ect. and then Avid DS Nitris/Symphony (PC) for our final master. I'll always use PC for Video and Audio.

Where's the Linux option on the poll? The only free operating system in the bunch and it's not even on the list... that's crazy.

Yeah man viva opensource! I won't vote windows or Mac, I want Linux :)

Linux have NLE yes, some free (CINELERRA: http://www.linuxmovies.org/software.html) some not (Discreet Smoke or Piranha Cinema: http://www.ifx.com/piranha/5.0/).

You can find more on:

Some of the biggest post house have made the turn to Linux years ago...

Well technically speaking if you use Linux you tick the PC option, since Linux (mostly) runs on PC.

I think the pollster really meant to ask Windows or OSX and got confused, which leads me to think the pollster uses a Mac.

Yeah, technically Linux runs on the PC, but it requires different programming efforts and so it really deserves it's own optionbox.

Well technically Linux can run either ppc or x86, but yeah pratically most people run Linux with x86 :-)

And yes I agree that "it requires different programming efforts", not bigger effort on an overwhole view, but different. Some very simple task on windows can become very nasty on Linux, and the opposite is also true.

Perhaps the question wasn't asked because except for flame, smoke and now inferno operators, the chances of a media guy mostly using Linux is relatively remote. Photoshop, Avid, FCP, Premiere, and Vegas being some notable culprits of this reality.

I have a dual (4 core) intel mac pro. Great speed for render stuff. But the 8 core intel chip should be out soon so I will retire my pc and pick up a second box and install bootcamp on one of the computers.

one vote - for 14 people with ~50 X86 cpus.

in general i have the impression, that as a rule of thumb indy/freelancers are rather fcp/osx and corps are rather win/linux...

if you want superior performance, 16 core systems are available since longer time. the board is ~1200-1300$, 16 core opteron.

3-4 times the processing power of todays dells/apples etc. will remain 3-4 times the procesing power when quadcores are in the massmarket, as it will be 32 core then.
