GH5 Report of the trip in Ethiopia with the GH5

Don't you have the user manual? You should really take the time to read and learn how the camera works.
By turning your focus ring, you engaged the magnification feature. Press the shutter half way to cancel it.

I thank you for your info but I think it is impossible to add an ExpoDisc because every ExpoDisc has a bayonet-like attack. Therefore I have to consider the diameter of the external part of the hood. How do you add it?

FoxAdriano, you are beyond help, because you claim every solution I suggest is impossible, and you are wrong. As I said in post #76, other companies besides ExpoDisc make white balance filters.

Here's a 100mm white balance filter that you hold in front of your lens. Just try to shoot that solution down, I dare you.

FoxAdriano, it seems that you're not up to the task to shoot with your GH5 (yet). You want all kind of magical solutions, and believe me, there is no such things as magical solutions. You want a better image (from your GH5) but aren't willing to aknowloedge that it won't be as easy to operate than any point n shoot camera.
Return to your other camera and shoot your videos with it, but at the same time, learn to shoot with the GH5 (not on real jobs). If this does not work, please be humble enough to realize that you need a DP that actually knows what he's doing.

No, I think you still don't understand. I don't want magical solutions. It is incredible you still think about it. I look for basic solutions and it is very easy to use GH5 in manual. I'm sure my problem was the VND filter. Now I understand how I have to use it. In April Il will reach Ethiopia again and I will make another documentary. If I will get a bad video again I will sell the GH5 and I will buy another camera but not Sony AX2000. I hope you understand me.

I've been reading your posts in this thread over and over Fox, trying to understand you're objectives. But I can't make sense of it. Your first post lists 7 complaints about the GH5, all of which you could have known before you bought the camera and several of which have nothing to do with the GH5 specifically. You put on an air of being an innocent amateur, yet you have made films for many years, having visited nearly 100 countries in the last 40 years. You complain that you are surprised about the light in Africa, yet your web information indicates you have been to Africa several times and have been to Ethiopia previously.

For some reason, you mention 'your country' but hide the fact that you are from Italy.

Now you have issues with making a quick white balance as the light changes, yet this certainly is not the first time you have had to white balance in changing light as you have been doing this for years and you have been doing it in Africa. I've compared your 'brown' clips with the other clips on your website and I can't tell a difference, so how is it these have to be thown in the trash while the others are on your website?

It's most curious and somewhat entertaining.

So the problem then is probably the language barrier. ;)

I'm back from a month's trip in Ethiopia and maybe I'll sell the GH5, but here in my country I have to make some other tests in Automatic before deciding. .... I started to hate my GH5 for many reasons. 1) In manual I could never shoot what I wanted but I shot only the final part of what I wanted to film......Now I would like to try GH5 in Automatic to see how it responds. If I'm not satisfied I sell it.

.... I look for basic solutions and it is very easy to use GH5 in manual.....

I'm confused.

Paul, you are right. This thread was born a long time ago and people here give suggestions but they can't remember all the threads and even you you did not read something, so I'll do a summary.
1) My videos on Internet are a bit more than trash because I don't make videos to put them on Internet. For various reasons I am forced to put some files on Intenet but they aren't original.
2) I make videos for many years, almost 40 years but I used always videocameras. I used also professional cameras of around 7-8Kg. They were shoulder cameras.
3) I'm italian and and for me it is a boast.
4) I never did a manual WB with my videocameras and I never put my videos on the trash, only some shots.
5) I bought the GH5 because I thought it was enough good to do automatic WB too. In Italy I didn't get problems with automatic WB and GH5 . Only in Africa I got those problems and I got brown clips.
6) I was not inclined to buy a camera to make videos but many guys told me to buy it and to use it in manual and I follow their suggestions. I used the GH5 in Italy in manual and I got good videos but in Africa I got very bad shots.
7) I went to Africa with my GH5 for the first time and for me everything was new with that camera.
8) In my first posts I was complaining about GH5 but not only with it but with all the cameras because I always wrote the cameras aren't good for my work and people insisted yes, they are good for me. Only I need experience. I want remember how many disadvantages has a camera compared to a videocamera to make a video.
9) Yes I know GH5 so little because I like more to work on the field and I don't like to study but I know well how to use a camera in manual. Don't worry. I used GH5 many times in my country and I got always good videos.
10) In April I will reach Africa again with my GH5 and I will do the last test. I will do manual WB because GH5 is orrible with automatic WB. Every videocamera is better. If I will get a good video I will I will keep my GH5. Otherwise I will buy a new videocamera. But a semi-professional videocamera, I want a videocamera better than Sony FDR-AX100 because I'd like to get a better image quality. In my opinion even with a lot of experience a camera can't be comfortable and as fast as a video camera to shoot.

Adriano, I cannot speak for everyone but certainly myself and a few others. From the beginning of your quest for better image quality we tried to get you to stay with a video camera. However you twisted the question around to say for instance, "will the GH5 get a better image than the AX100". Of course it can. But only if handled correctly. Done badly it will be worse than the AX100 in automatic. You were determined to get the GH5 and once this happened we tried to get you to learn how to use it as there was little point in telling you it was not for you as we had spent some time trying to do that !!! If you have been shooting film/video for 40 years and still do not understand the basics of photography that is a big problem in you achieving the image quality goal you have set yourself. To get that better image you desire you will need to get out of automatic and manage at least some of the parameters of the camera you will be operating. I have pointed you to the Lumix site to get all the instructional video several times and not sure if you have bothered to watch them all. Learning takes time and effort not done and the outcome will be disappointing. This last question you posted clearly showed you did not understand the Manual focus assist feature that can be invoked several ways. Its on the cWrench menu under focus/release shutter. I have mine turned off as I focus by touch focus most of the time through the app on my tablet. Clearly you have yours set to ON in one of the choices. There are so many things that you have not gone through the menus to see what they do and whether you want them. Until you do that and learn there will be lots of surprises that will not be good for you. You must understand that when you keep asking these questions we know you do not understand the basics of what you are doing. As I mentioned to you over a year ago managing the AX100 shutter speed and ND would have given you a big improvement in what you shot and been far less of a problem. Can the GH5 produce better video ? Of course it can when operated properly.

Lastly . You can set up the GH5 to be as fast to operate as a video camera. I have already mentioned setting up custom presets that give you more control than a video camera. You have 5 presets to use and these will manage almost all the parameters. I do not wonder around like my shoots are fixed in the theatre but I still have my presets as it is a sure way of managing the starting point.

+1

Also, buying a FS5 (I saw your other post)won’t help you either.
If you are struggling with the Gh5, the FS5 won’t give that great image if you don’t understand the basics.

Sorry but I understand you less and less. Could you tell me the advantages that the GH5 has in comparison to a video camera? GH5 has no filters, no good audio, no zoom, ridiculous focal excursion (12-60), it is harder to hold it in the hands, etc. etc. etc. The advantages that has the GH5 in comparison to video camera are: less weight and maybe a bit better image quality. But how much effort to have a slightly better video quality!!!

I am telling you that you don’t have the basic knowledge to shoot with either camera.

But I'm saying that you don't know me at all and you like to comment on me. It seems to me that you are a great technical expert but you have not yet understood me. If I go to a forum where they talk about video cameras, everyone says that it's better to film with a video camera. If I go on a forum that treats about cameras everybody tells it's better to film with camera. If I go on a forum that talks about Sony everyone says that Sony is the best. If I go on a forum that treats Panasonic everyone says that Panasaonic is better than Sony. etc. etc. etc. On many forum many expert guys tell me a video camera is better than a camera to shoot in my work. In this forum you tell me I don't know basic knowledge about GH5. After 40 years I make video do I not know basic knowledge? I think there is a language barrier and you don't understand me. In my opinion you are making a great error.

Do you realize that we are actually trying to help you here? I understand that you can be offended by some of my (our) comments, but in my defense, it's been a bit frustrating to help you due in part by the language barrier but also by lack (so it seem) of basic knowledge in photography. My native language is french, so I kinda understand that it can be hard to communicate in english, but at some point, you need to realize that your not helping your case by asking so many questions (some can be self answered with basic knowledge of photography and/or by reading the owner's manual) without taking the time to address each problem as they come.

Yes, it is truth, I don't like to study. I already wrote it but I also wrote I always shoot as joe12south has suggested me at the post 95. I am attentive to the 180° rule. but I got problems in Africa, only in Africa. Therefore could you tell me how can I set my GH5 if that config is no good. What is the biggest suggestion to shoot in Africa that I didn't follow it?

Yes, it is truth, I don't like to study.....

Well, there it is. It all becomes clear now. If you do not do your own research, then you will drift along with the winds of the opinions of others. If you have been shooting for 40 years, and you are asking these fundamental questions then you can only expect to continue to be disappointed. Stop talking on forums for as you said, everyone has a different opinion and advice. Only you know what will work for you by studying the cameras. Any one of the cameras sold today will give you a more than satisfactory image. It's just a matter of finding out which one satisfies you the most.

Only 3 things to get right....always!...WB, exposure and focus.
And another note...whether you like to study or not is irrelevant....nobody on this forum can anticipate the conditions you are going to encounter....that's why one uses location scouts....photographing locations under various conditions, and then the crew, be it one or seven in turn goes to the chosen locations...to make sure they will have everything they need when they turn up to shoot...you have to be even more prepared than that....alternatively you can hire someone to shoot for you if money is not the issue.
