Replica battery charger?

I'm going to buy some replica batteries for the 550D. I thought I read somewhere I would need to get a separate battery charger -- is this correct? Replica batteries cannot be re-charged in the supplied Canon charger?

Thanks.

You're correct, each charger can only charge the battery they're designed for, they wont work when trying to charge the other.

Usually if you're buying off ebay, sellers will have auctions for Charger+Battery and just Batteries. Just make sure you buy the right auction! :P

Thanks, mate. I'm thinking of getting batteries I've seen on Amazon: there are three replicas I've seen: Invero, Maxim and Ex-Pro (all about £14 compared to the Canon battery on Amazon which is £40).

Mmmm, can't see an obvious charger for those batteries listed on Amazon. Any third party charger recommendation to work with these replica batteries?

There's a few 3rd party auctions on ebay, such as this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/UK-Charger-Fo...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_3?hash=item4aa0569925 (you'll need an adapter for that, as it's a 2 pin US wallplug)

Generally speaking, most 3rd party chargers will do the job, but I like to play it safe and buy them from one seller/auction since they're guaranteed to work together. Here's two Amazon listings if you're not as keen to go down the ebay route: Battery, Charger

Just general advice for most battery auctions you'll see: the rated storage is usually a falsehood. If you look on your cameras battery, and then an auction, and notice that the auction is stating a 50% increase to storage capacity or more, it's very likely they're just exaggerating to get you to buy. I think the highest, legit amount of extra capacity you're likely to see is around the 15-25% mark.

I bought the imode knockoff batteries for the T2i and they work just fine in the Canon brand charger that came with the camera. Just charged one last night, the green light came on and everything.

Thanks, I'll give the supplied charger a go first, and get a third-party charger if need be. I guess it won't damage the Canon charger or the replica battery if I try this?

??

I guess all of my 3rd party batteries should not work then. It truly bothers me when someone post something as fact, when that is simply not the case. Many 3rd party batteries will charge with the original charger.

Really sorry then. I was going off the presumption that since the 5D and 7D batteries didn't charge in off brand chargers, the 550D's wouldn't either.

My apologies again - I'll know better next time!

T2i batteries don't have a chip in them like the batteries for the 7D or 5D. Battery chargers for the 5D and 7D look for that chip and when they aren't present in the generic batteries, they won't charge them.

Generic chargers charge generic batteries because they don't look for that chip.

So, T2i chargers will charge generic or canon LP-E8, because they don't have chips.
