Rendering Settings In Vegas For The HMC150

Hi, I have rendered my video with the 720 30p template and a 720 60p template but neither have worked. In the rendered footage, if the clip was zooming in or out it leaves a streaky sort of smear that was not there in the original footage or while editing. I am editing in a 720 30p template timeline, I have also tried a 720 60p timeline. None of the footage have effects added on, the only editing is a text insert and cutting the clips size down. No clips are longer than 30 seconds. The footage itself is shot in 720 60p.

WMV or if there is a better format that can be viewed on Windows Media Player or Realplayer please specify. I might consider using this template for YouTube also.

Also, what software are you using? Not all NLE's have the same render options. I will post my settings from Vegas that I am happy with and will play in either WMP or Real Player:

Render as
Main Concept AVC/AAC (.mp4, using .h264)
Click "Custom" button
Set the frame size (1280x720)
Profile: Main
Frame Rate (29.97)
Field order: None (Progressive Scan)
Pixel Aspect Ratio (1.000)
Variable Bit Rate, Two Passes

Use whatever Max and Average bitrate you want to give you a file size vs quality. I use a 6k or 7k average for a 2 minute video on Vimeo.

Examples:

Like I said, these are for Vegas Pro. If you use something else, you may want to test some of these settings for the available render options. I've gotten really good results by exporting uncompressed, then converting in Quicktime Pro to .mov. But I find I have more usability in MP4. (Playability on PS3, etc)

Im using Vegas 8.0 but I think I'll upgrade to Vegas 9.0 as soon as I can build my editing PC!

Hmmm. Is this Vegas Pro 8.0? I'm using 9.0 now, but 8.0 had it as well.
It should be under "Render as", then "Save as type", choose "Main Concept AVC/AAC" from the drop down menu.

I'm not sure if Vegas Studio has this rendering option.

Well, let's see.

1. Allow source to adjust frame size: Uncheck that.
2. Frame Rate 30.0000: Wrong. Set this to what you actually shot. Most likely 29.97 or 24.976. Maybe 59.94
3. Maximum (bps): For 720p video should be something close to 5,000,000.
4. Average (bps): for 720p video should be something close to 3,000,000

That's just in the stuff I see here. Who knows what else is messed up.

That's pretty much it, except for the points that Perrone made. You will want to bump up the bitrate from your screenshot while keeping the file size manageable. Most of my videos are 2 minutes or so in length, so 5-6k average with 8k max gives me results that I like with manageable file sizes. Any more than that starts to give diminishing returns in quality IMO. 2-4k average is adequate for most web stuff.

Also, make sure that your project settings match your media as close as possible. Make sure that you use Field Order "None (progressive scan)" and "Best" for the Full Resolution Rendering Quality option (under File>Properties).

Try these out and see how they work for you. I initially tried just the settings I mentioned in the previous post and the footage looked like it was stuttering. After I changed the project settings, it came out nice.

See this is what Im talking about. I would like to know also ...what if I shot in 1080 /24 how would I set the bps? I saw on another thread in order to get the best crisp footage I would have to up the bps. Is there a table on what numbers we can put for certain fps that we use? thanks perrone...you have the answers to all questions.

whenever you convert 60p to 30p in Vegas you also have to make sure your re sample rate is set to disabled. If not then Vegas thinks by default that it should re sample the framerate down to 30p by blending your frames together. You can find this option by right clicking on the clips in your time line. You can select a group of clips and it will apply to the all of them.

Even if you set your project to 60p when you render to WMV as 30p Vegas will still try to re sample the frames. By setting re sample to disabled Vegas will use every other frame the way I'm sure you expected it to.

I don't really have a table. I've just done this stuff a few hundred times now, and arrived at what *I* like through trial and error. And not all codecs are created equal. And not all encoders are ether. I was absolutely STUNNED by the difference between the MediaCoder AVC codec results I got in Sony Vegas versus what I got out of Sorenson Squeeze. It was like I was using a completely different codec. Enough so that I NEVER do my encodes in Vegas any more. But these are only things you learn as you go through these processs.

So take a 10 second timeline, encode it to 720p at 1Mbps, 3Mbps, 5Mbps, 10Mbps, 20Mbps, and maybe 40Mbps. And see what you like. Do the same with 1080p sources. Then make some value decisions between quality and file size.

Thanks guys, the results are fantastic! If I film in 60fps next time I just change the FPS when I render?

That get's a little stickier. If you intend your final render to also be at 60fps, then yes, just change the fps when you render. BUT if you want your final result to be at 30fps or 24fps, then your render setting will need to be that, AND you'll need to do some work in the editor before getting to that point too.
