Remote LANC control.....what are you using?

I would like to a remote box (with wire) to place on my grip but I am not sure what to try. Anyone using any of them and have any feedback on their performance?
 
I used Manfrotto 521I. It's only been few months since I bought but it looks like the product has been disconntinued. It was fairly cheap ($160) compared to other options. I also like the fact that it's compact in size. It pretty much lives on my tripod. I've also used it on a steadicam setup.

The focus control is fucntional with NEX lenses, which can be used to perform a very smooth rack focusing. You can also turn on/off the camera.

I use Manfrotto 521pro, with focus control on e-mount lenses, start/stop recording plus trun on/off the camera.

I sent an email to Sign Video in Portland Oregon to see if they had any interest in making something specific for the FS 100 etc. I also mentioned that solving the Ninja talking to the FS100 issue would be good as well. Let you know what they say if anything. Seems to me that a small control without the need for zoom should be quite an easy build. In my DVX100B days I built one but Panasonic is not LANC and I am not acquainted with it.

I should probably also mention that as of today I am now the proud owner of an FX100, (80-200 Sony, 24-70 Zeiss and Tokina 11-16, 50 f/1.4 Zeiss) and I am very very happy with my decision to buy this camera!

Any LANC controller can control focus through E-Monut lenses on the FS100? How smooth is it?

The Manfrotto 521pro is discontinued, would you recommend any others?

It's very smooth. Though since there isn't a good way to control the speed, it might not be a great way to pull a rack focus. But for instance where you have to fine tune the focus without disturbing the camera, it would work great.
 
I´m not 100% sure if the LANC does anything but rec/stop on the FS100 - much like the included handle.
If so, any switch or button, some cable and a jack would work.
I´m planning to build a button (same type like that on the handle) into my hand grips.

Frank, are you calling in a liar?? :)

You can turn on/off power, rec/stop, manual focus (e-mount lens only).
 
What about the Manfrotto 521PFI Focus Remote Control ?

I know it says it's meant for Panasonic cameras, do you think they have a different protocol?
 
Olof Ekbergh makes brilliant wooden handgrips "à la" Aaton for the AF100, with a handy start/stop button on top.

I would love to have such handgrip on my rig. However, the FS100 doesn't share the same remote protocol as the AF100. If you check inside the kit FS100 plastic handgrip, you'll find a small chip that send the start/stop LANC signal to the camera. On the AF100, a simple on/off switch with a resistance linked to the camera throught it's remote input seems to be enough to start/stop record. Can you describe the focus control a little more

I find the focus pretty unusable on the Kit lens (non reactive, inconsistent, so would not have high hopes for a lanc!)

Can you crash from infinity to macro, do subtle readjustments etc..

I am looking at buying a LANC controller for my FS 100, but before I do I would really like to
know if anyone has been able to pull a smooth rack focus with one.

A stupid question: I'm going to mount the FS100 handle to my rails, will any 1/8 stereo type cable be ok to extend the wire to the rear of the camera and still be able to start/stop rec?

I'm using a LANC extension cable from B&H. Standard stereo extension cables may not be properly shielded.
