Remote camera control

I'm using my Canon 60D on a long crane and using Canon utilities and a notebook with a USB cable to focus and start/stop the camera. It works but not the smoothest method under pressure. Also my laptop battery doesn't last long. Any suggestions on a low cost alternative. Just to monitor, quick focus between takes and start/stop the camera. Thanks

I just found my electronic cable release which I never used because it only triggers stills but it does activate the quick focus the same as pressing the shoot button half way. The cable is short though. Maybe I could get some kind of extension cable made up. Do you know what type of plug is used for that camera port?
