reflecmedia

O.K. it says that the fabric is 1 meter ( 39.37 inch) wide and up to 100 meters long.

Reflection ratio is 100 cd/lx

Price per square meter is 84,00 EUR + 19% VAT

So the Digital Video Fabric is cheaper - for us because of the Dollar rate and for you because of the shipping.

Hi Matt:

I put the controller onto "7", that seems to work best for us. Where do you put yours at?

Barry, I do get somewhat of a halo but it is never a problem to key it out.

Dan

7 or 8, yup. But as you see from the screen caps I put up there, I get no gray rings. Talent was 18" from the backdrop.

Hey Barry,

Are you using the Datavideo or the Reflecmedia when you get the gray halo?
It seems the Reflecmedia ring is larger than the Datavideo version.
I wonder if the small difference in the angle from the lens axis is the problem.

Reflecmedia's Retro (Back drop) quality is much better than Datavideo, But both works great.
I have teamed up Datavideo Retro ($619=10X8), It's much cheaper than reflecmedia ($2000=8X8), and reflecmedia's Ring (Datavideo ring = vignetting problem)

Barry Is Right "there's a gray halo around everyone". Gray Halo isn't a problem for Keylight, It does have nice control sliders for that.

Tell them to take their glasses off.

Bingo! Have been doing that this week.

Problem is that I sometimes interview and do intros with people like Peter Bogdanovich and Leonard Maltin. For both of them, their glasses are their "image". You try to get Peter to remove his glasses, good luck.

Dan

Any other users of the Datavideo screen, I'd love to hear your impression. Also, of their two color lightring.

Also, of others who've experienced the gray halo, and what they've used to deal with it.

How does this work? I just saw it the other day, but I'm so confused as to how it actually helps you.

The system works like this: There are thousands of tiny reflector beads in the Chromatte curtain that comes with the system. You get a green or blue LED Litering to mount on your camera. This is a directional item, meaning if it's on, and even a foot away from you, the curtain will still look gray basically. However, once you or the camera look through the center of it, the entire curtain is blue or green, and you can adjust the intensity of it via the included dimmer switch.
Now, the gray 'halo' some people mention most often comes from incorrect placement of camera to talent or talent to backdrop. Your talent must be at least 3 feet off the backdrop, and your camera (litering) must be at least 10 feet off your talent. This helps eliminate most of the glow back or halo you would see. Halo is also created by having a ring too large for your lens. Ideally the colored light would come from the center of your view, but since you can't do that with a lens, you want it as close around your lens as possible. For smaller cameras, the new Microlite system helps greatly.
For glasses wearing talent, just try to make sure your camera is as far away from the talent as possible while still achieving the look you desire. This is the same for using teleprompters. You can offset your camera just a little, and from 10-12 feet away they can still be reading the prompter and look basically like they're reading into the camera.
With the overall price reduction of the systems, Reflecmedia overall is an amazing green screen solution, but it's still not going to be for everyone. I just happen to like it a lot :0) Hope this helped,

Good explanation Random.

I too really dig the system, I have been using it for about three years now and it is pretty cool.

Ring reflections are there no matter what you do when the subject wears "bug eye" types of lenses like Bogdanovich does. That's been my only beef with it. Ran tests with the ReflecMedia vs. traditional using green foam backed material and two Flolights lighting the screen. The editor did tell me that he pulled a cleaner key with the green material over the ReflecMedia, he said it had cleaner darks and he could pull more fine hair around the edge of the subject. But the keys from the Reflec have been good enough to pass QC for all of the studios.

My last recommendation on getting rid of the ring light in the glasses would be to try throwing a key light up above the subject and a little behind, just a touch, almost like a hair light, to maybe get the effect of shining a light through a window in a lit room, you don't get as much reflection on the glass of the window when the light's on inside... just a thought, but it may just be one of those scenarios where it's not the best solution.

Thanks for the info Random.

Kwan, or anyone, can you point me towards more info on this vignetting problem? Or just explain in more detail? I'm actually considering going the other way, with a reflecmedia chromatte, and the much cheaper Datavideo lightring with blue and green LEDs, so I need to know...

Can I get a little more info on this? Do the control sliders let you, essentially, select the gray of the halo, the better to filter it out? I haven't used keylight yet.

For one, the Reflecmedia Chromatte system with included litering (blue or green) 8x8 curtain and all is now a lot cheaper than Kwan said
It's much cheaper than reflecmedia ($2000=8X8), and reflecmedia's Ring (Datavideo ring = vignetting problem)
(now an 8x8 with Litering for average size cameras is $1500 and for the smaller palmcorders is $1100 with Microlite)
and the rings are top-notch. I don't know much about datavideo's vignetting problem, but I know the key's we've pulled with Reflecmedia when shot right have been consistently fantastic.
As said above, the only issues with RM have been bounceback from the LED in glasses, or if shot against the recommended 3' off curtain and 10' off camera. This is kind of redundant information, but the video link i posted above speaks for itself really. You can't go wrong with RM, and you can get the litering in blue or green, but sadly they haven't made one that has both in one yet.
Also, a bit of extra info, the Blue Litering with RM keys just a little better in FCP than the green, I believe this is true for the datavideo colors as well. Haven't done much with it in AE, but just a little tip there.
