redrock red carpet

On the contrary, I know there was time scheduled. But I think it's important to again point out that this was our first event of this nature and on this scale. And it was pulled together in a relativel short amount of time (thanks to our legs on the ground, the FM crew). All that combined into some things maybe not going exactly as planned.

So, my commenting on the "mingle" time is to say, ok the way it went this time didn't allow for the mingle time we had anticipated so let's make some modifications for the next one.

There was also a fair amount of mingling going on before the screening began while we were feverishly trying to get the stream online and get things going.

That said, even being trapped behind the computer the bulk of the evening, I managed to talk briefly to a number of people.

I'm not saying we did everything right, but I'm also not willing to accept that we are responsible for missed networking opportunities.

I think Larry's last few posts have really depicted the event that I witnessed.

Rumor is I'm hosting the next screening. I'm contacting most of the bigger pimps in Los Angeles to get some great "entertainment"... Next fest will go off with a bang! Wobbly H's for everyone!

Seriously, Tommy, why don't you and Brian agree to host the next event? You're both right there close to Hollywood and have industry connections. I would think you both could put together a well-organized event that can build on what we started this time.

...Only one of these projects have come about because I was "pitched" though. Normally I sit back and watch, and when someone rises to the top and piques my interest, I then ask them what their plans are and if they'd like to work together. I don't necessarily pick projects so much as I pick people that I believe in and want to assist to hit the next level, in whatever way I can...

Yes. This is the assumption I made, and the reason I didn't pitch any ideas or throw any scripts around. I figured most professionals had the same theory that Barry exhibited here. Maybe not.

Oh...Tommy and Brian putting on a screening? I have a feeling that would consist more of a wide selection of topless dancers than DVXuser-made films. Not sure if that's the best bet...

Why aren't you hosting again, Mark?

And Tommy's "contacts" are really only whomever he can "roofie" at the local Spearmint Rhino or Bob's Classy Lady.

Ha ha.... I think Tommy has a few connections beyond the low life crowd he is so fond of hanging with.

We're hopefully going to be too busy shooting a feature to host the next function but we'd love to help behind the scenes.

This was the first attempt and for that it was outstanding. I can see people's frustrations, but for me I got what I went for. I am hoping that this will become an integral part of the DVXfest for years to come. It was a great way to wind down by meeting everyone and getting together in one place. Let's make the next ones exponentially better. I would say give more time to talk to people, that is all I have for now. Since I didn't have a film in the screening I cannot really comment on what I think should be done about the VIPs.

I might. :)

It's an interesting notion to host the event. I'd have to give it some serious thought. I'd also want to sit down with you guys (you, Tim, and Luis) to see what you thought could have been handled differently. I'd also want to get feedback from everyone regarding how the entire thing went...

I for one am very happy with the way things turned out.

Sure, I went for fun (which I had a lot of) but I met tons of people. People I feel I will have a good beneficial relationship with. One of the great people I met is Mark Johnson, a peep in the biz. In fact I asked him to show my work to the DP of 02 and you know what he said: "Take a hike fatty" J/K he agreed to show R.P.D.M. to a union cinematographer. An opportunity I wouldn't have normally.

Now, I asked him kindly to do this. He didn't PM me and say "hey Joe, anything I can do to further your career in cinematography"? "Well sure Mark"!

No, I asked him and he kindly obliged.

Just like if I would have inquired at the screening if there were any *important* people to talk to, he would have filled me in. Because he's a nice guy.

There were many people I met that were great for my network. Matt, Luis, Tim, Tom, Brandon, Nate, Zak, Jason, Barry, Dustin, That one guy who was a the BBQ and nobody knew why, The list goes on.

These are all great contacts to have and all of these people are doing great things, and knowing them may afford me an opportunity to further myself working with them.

So yeah, good times.

 I am not on the list...

Unless I am the guy who was at the BBQ and nobody knew why. In which case I will be more depressed.

Joe,
After you and Mark left, me and Matt Gettemeir were talking about how much of a dope ass mofo you were. Seriously enjoyed your company dude. Can't wait for you to get out here again.

Joe - I believe you were one of the guys I met on the sidewalk as I was heading out that night. Was cool to make the face-to-face connection, as I did with many here (including you Tommy), would have been nice to hang more and get to know you guys better ... but I wasn't able to come to the after party ... next time I will allow more time so I can hang out (and the good news for all of you is I don't drink, so I'm a cheap date  )

You mean he wasn't slobbering, stumbling drunk the whole time?

Joe, you've grown up! What happened?

Yeah, Larry... how come you didn't make your way over to Luis' place afterwards? There were diet sodas there so you didn't have to get plastered like most of us did... :)

No there were not! At least, I was told there wasn't. Someone said the Pepsi had disappeared before I got there which left me with water.

I had to drive an hour back to Costa Mesa and then had a full day Saturday, part of which was visting my uncle in Long Beach who has been in a coma for 2 years. I don't get to visit very often, so when ever I am down that way I always make time to go by and see him. Also spent some time with my cousin who I don't get to hang with a lot. Then had to make the drive home Saturday night.

Next time I'll plan to stay an extra day and come to the after party ... you guys need someone sober to document the festivities

Here are just a few preview pics from the upcoming TommyinLA hosted screening: GET THERE EARLY.

Whoa there! All I drank was water! But I did not document the festivities, unfortunately. I now regret not recording some footage or at least taking a bunch of pictures. I assumed everyone else would and I could get it off of them. I have yet to see anything really.

And Gage, that is exactly what I was afraid of. :D
