redrock red carpet

I dont think it needs that sort of structure, it can be much more laid back, but more time is necessary and someone knew who and where these people were. I think it was Tim that said he "got a pocket full of business cards". Maybe an effort to round the finalists up and put them in front of the people. It also sound like they were all in one room. Pretty convenient to put people in front of them.

Stop talking to me, Jeff. We're out of this.

Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! What the ****? I don't feel comfortable with any of this!

----------

Let me just make this clear once and for all: I do not feel that I was jipped at the event. I was not dissapointed in any way. I was simply representing the other point of view, which I can see. Personally, I went because of the networking opportunities, but not just with industry professionals, with the people I have befriended and talked filmmaking to for the last however long its been. I wanted to meet DVXuser Members as well as execs, but if that latter didn't happen (which it didn't) I wasn't going to be upset. I have said this before: I met a bunch of great people that I hope to be able to work with at some point in the future. Full stop.

What was the reason to go for people across the country, if not for the networking with Hollywood heavy-hitters?
Let's get a couple things straight right now. I flew down there to play with your dog and to see brown dress girl. That's IT. ;-)

I don't know what you guys were doing, but I got an agent, a manager, a three picture deal at sony, a two picture deal with miramax, a suitcase full of business cards, and a date with Scarlet Johansen.

Seriously though, I think some of us may be unrealistically hypothesizing about the people we missed meeting and what opportunities they could or would be likely to create for us.

Most (all?) of the VIPs were personally invited by Fat Monster and they would have taken meetings with them some time this month anyway.

As far as I know Amanda Plummer, the actors from 02, a cool but obscure character actor that plays older mobsters, and some people FM was already talking to about various things were there. But Harvey Weinstein was not. :)

There were TONS that put brown dress girl to shame this past weekend Ken.

Hey... with Chris Hansen hiding in this thread I'm surprised you didnt run.

Great. Now Jack is going to soil Scarlet.

That's crazy talk! Pics or it didn't happen.

Brown dress girl was easily in her early to mid 20's. Unless... you umm... were referring to what I would have done to Danny Bonaduce?

I think this is a healthy discussion. Hopefully, whomever organizes the next event will be able to have much more lead time to plan it and to make sure those attending can feel adequately prepared for the time they have.

I'm just thinking out loud here, but perhaps the finalists should be given an opportunity to provide screeners and press kits that can be given to those designated as VIP attendees. It wouldn't be mandatory, but if you care to produce some materials they could be made available in packets for the industry pros.

Also, I'd recommend that those attending who want to network might want to consider some of the following:

1) Buttonhole the organizers or hosts before things get rolling and get their input about who they know is attending and how the event will play out. I'm not suggesting that anyone was negligent for not doing this. It is a good practice and worth thinking of down the road. I personally always try to find out early who the host is of an event and who was involved in organizing it. When Tim and I were recently invited to a Battlestar Galactica cast party we identified the hosts, who then introduced us to Mark Shepard's agent and one of the show's producers. IF you ever have the opportunity to attend another event that Fat Monster hosts I'll tell you now that we'll be busy, but I promise you that we will take time to chat and give you what info we have about the guests in attendance.

2) Look for people with cameras. In this case Brian from Redrock Micro was actually serving as the head photographer for the red carpet. He's a person worth schmoozing in his own right. Also, he and his assistant photographer were probably among the most knowledgable people there regarding who was in attendance. Follwing this same rule (looking for people with cameras) might have led you to notice Kiana, the host/reporter from the REEL CHANNEL and her cameraman. They were looking for people to interview and would have been happy to interview any of the filmmaker finalists.

3) If you see a red carpet and white backdrop it's a good idea to circulate and watch who is being interviewed. Admittedly, you can't be in all places at one time, but whenever we attend Hollywood events we do try to keep an eye on the ubiquitous red carpets.

4) Look for any possibility to break the ice and introduce yourself to any industry folks. Here's an example: We made it very clear repeatedly in our thread that our cast for "O2" was comprised of SAG actors who work regularly in television and film. All of them (Tim Abell, Ana Alexander and Todd Lowe) were at the event and I would hope that all of you would have felt comfortable approaching them to introduce yourself. They all LOVE this forum and they all were blown away by the quality of the films. Sometimes working actors of their stature are the best contacts for filmmakers because they interact with producers, agents and crew constantly. Moreover, they all have good insight into what's happening in film and television right now. Todd came to the party from the set of his HBO series and Tim brought a producer and an actor from Law and Order to the event. I wish there had been more time so I could have brought everybody together. However, my point is that these were three faces that should have been recognizable to most of you and they would have been flattered had you approached them. Look for opportunities like that (I can promise you if Shawn's eyelash girl is ever in the same county I am, she is going to get a big hello :)

These are just some random thoughts that came to my mind in hindsight. Hopefully the organizers of the next event can make it more "user friendly" and hopefully there will be more time to mingle and schmooze.

I think that is similar to what I said earlier. There were people I could have introduced myself to but didn't, and that was my own fault. Yes, there could have been more time to identify and shmooze these people. I am really on the fence with this one, I got what I went for but I see the points you are all making.

Dont overthink it. You had a great time. We all did. And we got to meet your mom.

Overthink? It's almost 10 at night, I can't overthink things. I just realized how long I have been sitting at the computer. ****! Am I wasting my life away?

Oh, and why does everything come back to my mom? I mean, Jesus Christ! And don't answer that if your response is going to be what I think it is going to be!

Barry Green was there. Everyone knows what he looks like. He mentioned that no one came up to him and pitched a story idea or anything...

This is an add'l point that is not part of the ongoing discussion as to where certain people may or may not have been sitting and/or how accessible they were/were not.

It's Barry Green though... Emmy Award winning producer, and not one person had a script they wanted to pitch to him or anything of the sort? He was quite accessible during the screening, and probably the most approachable of any "big wigs" that might have been there. I didn't go to network though. That really wasnt' something that ever seemed the focus of the event to me. I went to meet some of you guys and hang out and enjoy the evening. Plain and simple.

Later,
Jason

If I've learned anything living in this town for the last decade, its that unless you are insanely hot, no one is going to come to you. you have to grind it out and earn every inch. had I been there, I most certainly would have made my way up to mark johnson, given him a big hug and a pinch on the ass, and said "introduce me to so-and-so".

edit: speaking of making your own opportunities, I should mention that IFHY is screening this Sunday, July 17 at 2:45pm at the LAEMMLE SUNSET 5 as part of the DANCES WITH FILMS festival here in Los Angeles. Come and cast your Audience Award vote and help put IFHY over the top! Tickets, Directions and Schedule See You There! Don't Miss It! :)
