Redcine...

Red Leader
REDCINE is moving along a breakneck speed and will be ready to ship with the camera. One thing you should know is that REDCINE is a Pro application. We will make it as user friendly as possible, but count on a a very comprehensive program. For you rookies, REDCINE will step you up to the big leagues. Time to elevate everyone's game.

The big leagues ? You mean it will lack any sense and be completely unintuative ?

Will it come with a 600 page manual ?

As Alan Kay said: "Simple things should be simple, complex things should be possible."

One easy way to make REDCINE scale from newbies to old digital imaging pros is to toss all the functionality pros want in there, but ship the app with lots of presets for common cases. People could learn what all the settings did by looking at how the presets changed them.

Hmm. REDCINE sounds like it'll be a great solution for today. What we want in the long run, of course, is NLEs that are to RAW video what Aperture is to RAW stills -- that is, NLEs that natively work with common RAW video formats. I hope RED is very open with the REDCODE codecs, as that will increase the chances we'll see something like this. (Though I suspect it'll be awhile either way.)

Thats good to hear. The easy to use work flow of this camera is going to be just as a big deal as with the 4K. I'm glad to hear we will have a function set that will be more intuitive then just a couple of chocies. I think the ability to work with EDL's and not just bring in some information but all information. Also a batch Job manager for multipule projects or segments of a project is also going to be very important.

Well guys I can't wait to see what it looks like Jim a Screen Shot ??

anyway thanks for the update.

Our goal, John, is to make it useable with no manual. It will be very powerful while very intuative. I'm not sure if all of you know how much we have bitten off. A 4k camera and a program to make it's use simple and powerful for almost every application. "A camera without a workflow will not sell" I was once told.

Jim, Graeme, Stuart or whoever:

Will each Redcine license have a limited number of seats?

There has been a lot of talk about freelance ENG Red shooters "handing over their footage at the end of the day". In that case non-Red owners (the editor / assistant editor) will have to convert Redcode to their prefered codec. How will they get a copy of Redcine? Also many folks have talked about supplementing the cost of purchase by renting out their Red One from time to time. Again, non-Red owners (renters) will end up with Redcode files.

Selfishly I'd just like to have a seat of Redcine both at home and at work. And if I (feeling generous) lend out my Red to friends I don't really want to be the guy staying up all night converting their files.

Thanks in advance.

I'm really, really excited about REDCINE.

I think the best part of ALL aspects of the RED approach is that they aren't watering anything down - even if it means that it things may be slightly less "user-friendly." This is a pro camera for pro users! If you want shallow DOF, you're going to have to learn to control it! I saw a post on another forum where someone actually said that the RED image is "too clean" and they should add grain in the camera to make it look "more like film." Just the thought blows my mind. RED evolution is not looking to be film - it is looking to be the alternative - and I think in the end, a lot of people are going to be stunned at just what is possible. Sure, it may come with a bit of a learning curve, but by setting the bar high, they can acheive greater things. RED is removing limits and providing opportunities. I can't wait to dive in.

The more we get into this, the more excited I get. The surprise to me is how high we have set our sights and how fast we are solving problems. John better get his reservation in soon and quit dicking around... :-)

Thanks for the awesome news Jim. Things just keep getting better and better.
good news?!.. man, i want my workflow on my hands without hiring a software engineer.. i don't know if it's clear but there are a lot of artists with a red reservation in their schedule..

and there is who is posting like this our pal_e..

i know we'll have the Cineform RAW as alternative.. with luck and good work from Mr David Newman.. but we'd like to have the REDCINE option especially if we will be red camera users and we'll need for an intuitive easy-friendly interface over there (workflow) too.. thx

Oh, god. I keep hearing the arguments to dumb down the software for the masses. To keep it from being too complicated. Please don't talk Jim in to crippling our software because you don't understand the basics of modern video technology.

Just to properly set lights and understand F-stops takes an understanding of advanced math, yet you seem to have delt with that.

This art of our is accomplished through massive technical and mathematical knowledge. If you're too lazy to learn the basic concepts of your medium, then you should move on to something else.

Jim, THANK YOU for aiming to create something so powerfull. I plan to make you proud of your baby!

Great! A piece of software that wont patronise the artist. After all, a "hands on" approach is how all of this started didnt it. ;)

Due to REDS company ethic, I feel the entire process of using the data will be transperent and tweakable to the Nth degree.

Make it as powerful as possible!

This is one of my areas of expertise! I look forward to making extra money on rentals by doing Redcine for customers after they shoot!

Thanks for the update and I look forward to hearing more about what Redcine can (and can't) do. :)

speak-up for yourself, ok?

"Just to properly set lights and understand F-stops takes an understanding of advanced math, yet you seem to have delt with that."

don't mix-up the things.. it isn't the same thing.. i begin to believe that you never knew a set.. i mean a film set.. there, there are T-stops not F-stops..

"This art of our is accomplished through massive technical and mathematical knowledge. If you're too lazy to learn the basic concepts of your medium, then you should move on to something else."

art? do you call it art?!.. only if it is the art of offending.. quite offensive.. again: speak-up for yourself.. don't speak for the things that you don't know ANYTHING!

"Jim, THANK YOU for aiming to create something so powerfull. I plan to make you proud of your baby!"

maybe i should change my user name..

I honestly believe this is a valid argument. Look at it this way... when was the last time you got involved in the designing/creation of any NLE application (mass appeal or pro) like Jim and the Red team have agreed to do with us? That I guess, answers your question.

Dumbing up the process for a pro application designed to handle a 4k workflow can be compared imho to a book on "Calculus for Dummies". You preety much have to have an inkling as to what the heck you're doin'... otherwise you shouldn't be messin' with it in the first place.
