REDCINE and Color Grading

Hello all. I'm not sure if this topic has been addressed directly yet or not. There has been some forums (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=79584 for example) that have been helpful in the issue, but here are my questions. The way I understand it, is REDCINE is what allows you to color correct your RED footage, is that correct? What is the RED Team doing as a GUI for REDCINE. The reason I ask is that I was at a telecine session last night for some 35 that we shot and was curious at how to achieve such professional results of color grading but with the RED footage. Is the REDCINE going to have some intense GUI that would equal (which is expecting/hoping too much) a daVinci or a Spirit? Or am I going to have to take it to a colorist, or use something expensive like Lustre? And if so, what is a suggested workflow for that? Importing and dumping the footage to HDCAM SR or D5 and then doing a tape to tape telecine or take the files to them directly on a harddrive? As stated in the above quoted forum, there is definitely an element of colorist talent involved, so I'm not neglecting the fact that the best thing to do is to take to a talented colorist, but I'm just curious at how the color grading is going to work with the RED footage. Thanks in advance for comments...and I think briferq might be able to shed some light. Sounds like he's had a lot of experience in the matter.

REDCINE can do *some* color correction, but it is not a colorist tool. It is not a high-end tool at the end of post. It is a RAW conversion tool (like Photoshop RAW camera plugin) with some color options (no secondary color correction for example) to get your footage in the ballpark for editing.

After editing you will have to take it into an approriate application (for your budget) to do final grading. Most of these applications work with DPX/Cineon/TIFF sequences, so I guess that's the 'best' workflow at the moment.

Thomas: that is correct, hence the mention of the RAW camera *plugin* for Photoshop and not just Photoshop itself.
