Red X on top left corner of dvx

Ok so i had a very interesting shoot today

I was shooting and a red x appeared in the top left of my camera. This has happened to me twice before in my 3 years i have owned the camera. I usually just shut it off and on and it goes away. I double check my footage and it is fine.

This time the x would not go away.

So I went and got a back up camera. The crazy things was when I pulled the tape out of the back up camera it was a low grade panasonic tape, thats what my friend used in his camera. I had pq tapes. So I put one in and believe it or not the red x came up on his camera. I freaked out.

I ran a panasonic head cleaner. Which honestly I didn't know how to do. I just put it in and hit play in the vcr mode....is that how you do it for 10 seconds? I didn't see a play button engage. Just a blue screen. Took the tape out my friends camera worked fine.

I got home reviewed the footage on my deck at home that I only use for logging. Stuff shot on my camera. no drop outs and it seems fine. The other footage also seems fine.

I tried to record on my camera with a new pq tape at home and no red x but major drop outs and weird noises on the audio when i play back.

Can someone just breakdown what happend there and how I get to red x's on two cameras in the same hour?

And 2 How do you run a cleaning cassette in this camera. There is no record tab in the panasonic head cleaner so you can't do it in record mode. In vtr mode there is just a blue screen do you just hit play and wait 10 seconds. Did i do that part wrong.

Is my friends camera ok...it seems fine... I kind of want to take both cameras to a service center.

my luck 2 red Xs

When

should i just run the panasonic cleaner through....and if so....when i put it in do you just hit play for 10 seconds.....not in record mode right in vtr mode but again do i hit play and just let it go for 10 seconds....sorry it just wasn't clear when I did it on my friends but it seemed to work...but I almost feel I should go get the heads serviced...professionally cleaned

.....i do big shoots and don't want it to come back anytime soon.

A professional cleaning will beat a tape head cleaner any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Follow the instructions on the tape head cleaner; it's far better than nothing and if it's what you've got with you, use it... if you see the red "X" it's best to clean the heads rather than to ignore it!

ok i have a random follow up...so I am taking my camera to the shop to get cleaned...my friends camera I ran a head cleaning tape and it seemed to have worked.

I feel bad though...I feel I should take the camera for a full cleaning....since I ran the tape and the red x is gone...should he be ok...or will it most likely come back?

Professional cleaning is better than using an abrasive head cleaning tape. However, if you ran the cleaning tape and the problem's gone, then you're probably okay. But don't use the head cleaner very much as it wears down the heads quickly.

it could also mean that you tape got slightly knocked off of the heads. That happened to me by bumping my camera as it ws recording, so don't do that. To fix that problem all I did was take the tape out and put it back in, that realigned the tape on the heads.
