RED user firsts

With RED supplying more visual, technological and developmental "firsts" than we know what to do with, RED users have a lot to live up to. When that ship day finally comes around and you finally havethe camera in your hands, what's the first thing you're going to do? After you've finished drooling on/bowing to/hugging/etc. the camera, what's the first thing you'll shoot? What will you do with this camera that nobody has ever done with this camera before?

Will you run to the nearest soundstage? Will you head to the green screen? Will you prep for that night exterior? Will you pop it on a steadicam? Will you just take it into your back yard? Who will be the first to shoot an FX plate? Who will shoot that first car chase? Who will shoot the first underwater footage? Who will point it at the moon?

I know that I want to be the first to take it in freefall... maybe I'll even rent an Arri Ultra Prime 8R for the occasion. Will I be first? Who knows.

What about you?

I'll be shooting the most beautiful beaches in the world - all over again - this time in 4k. I have a hard time even looking at my DV footage now. California and Hawaii Best Beaches are at the top of my list in 2007.

Not if I let Norman Kent borrow my RED before you get yours... :)

Thing is, he and Jim J. used to jump in the '70's and I think know each other. Jim, if you're reading this, you gotta get Norm on the short list.

I wouldn't doubt that the small size of the RED has at least a passing nod to you diver types... ;)

Here's his rig/camera and mine together on a shoot we did back in June... Fast forward a year and I hope we see a RED on that head.

Due to the sensitive nature of my first Red production, I'm afraid I can't reveal too many details. I'm sorry, but an inspired concept of this striking originality requires jealous security. But the script is written, the shot list complete, the scenery and props ready and waiting:

- black tarp
- chewing gun
- stogies
- watch
- porsche 950 (rental)

I'll let your imaginations ruminate on the possibilities. Now if only Schilowitz would sign his damn contract commitment we can get this show on the road (you think just anyone can portray the subtle complexities and Machiavellian motivations of the dastardly "Bubble Popping Psycho"??? The entire first act is set in motion by his shocking and tyranical deeds!!!!)

I always heard rumors to that effect, you can imagine that the camera-flying community is looking forward to its release. I'm no Norman Kent or Joe Jennings, so I may just have to accept coming in third. [particularly considering that I won't have a camera... I'll be renting from one of you ~600 lucky bastards ]

I've got a lot of respect for you diver types! I think you should push to be the first... you could always call up Jarred or Gibby with a proposal for their low-number units... "Trust me, I'm only going to have the camera running for my test for about a minute...".

Diving is not my cup of tea, and I only put my finger on it after the shoot was done. I coined this... "Skydiving is a sport where you're DEAD unless something goes right. Most other sports you are ALIVE unless something goes wrong."

My first footage will be of my two dogs, unlit with gain on in the living room, mostly out of focus. Why break tradition? Every camera I've owned for the last ten years has had to pass this test. :)

I wasn't up to date on Schilowitz- I thought he was leading the rebellion- and all was great. What ever needs to get done- I hope it happens to- as there are many counting on it.

My first footage I would hope be surrounded by fellow Red users- learning how everything properly works. A playground- with all having the same new awsome toy.

No Doubt. Like the scene out of 2001 when the man-apes figure how to use a femur as a weapon. I am going to play Richard Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra, circle the camera, maybe even poke it with a stick. Then I am going to commence to whippin' ass. ;-)
Hope you guys like that image, because no matter what has been said elsewhere to the contrary--this will be the dawn of a new age of aquisition.

Oh yes, Schilowitz is relentless - witness his vicious reaction as a Red employee attempts to enjoy a momentary break from processing reservations . Here:

For the love of God! What do you have against bubble gum Ted? What?!?!?

Depending on what format I decide to shoot and the month in which RED is released: either a spec commercial shot near John Day in easter Oregon or else stock photography from the summit of Mt. Rainier. (RED keep that camera light!)
