Red Scarlet footage anyone?

And still, we have only 1:30 worth of footage to go from. Does anybody other than myself find that puzzling? Again, somebody will post a picture of P Jackson with an Epic. That's like saying if you want to see Canon T2i footage, look at some 7D work.

I have to admit, I find this strange as well actually.

Dustylense, you seem really angry against the scarlet. there is thousands of thousands of videos shot with 24p 5d. People who don't care of slowmo. and hundreds of thousands of others camera's 24p. a client who wants some 120fps or 300fps will pay for a rental. anyway you have a very narrow vision of the kind of jobs people buying a scarlet do. you seem to base your arguments on the kind of job you do. but there is hobbyists, indies, event shooters, photographers, visual artists, vfx guys, docs, etc etc. and these people don't put 15000$+ in a cam without knowing what they are doing. don't underestimate them. they know the plus and minus of the camera and its workflow. they know it's not an epic. but the advantages are more important than the drawbacks for them .... and for me. it's the same with 35mm film camera, C300, 5D, ...., there is no perfect camera.
Oh, and the windowing is one of my favorite features. grain, deep dof, softer image, in raw, if i want.

Has anyone noticed that going purely off of pixels per second, if Scarlet can do 3k at 48fps, then it would also be able to do 96fps at 2k...so I feel like Scarlet may actually become more capable in the future, and I believe I remember Jim or Jarred hinting at something similar just after the announcement.

but there is hobbyists, indies, event shooters, photographers, visual artists, vfx guys, docs, etc etc. and these people don't put 15000$+ in a cam without knowing what they are doing. don't underestimate them.

Actually, you're dead wrong. I do know that 99% of these people don't know what they are doing by buying a Scarlet. Scarlet only makes sense for the motion picture industry, features/shorts. Anything out of that range, is a pure waste of money, technology and brain cells to get the Scarlet!

you again haha. well, you seem to know everything. you're such a clever guy. I love your work, I love your knowledge, you're an artist, I love you.

Thank you. But don't need to be patronizing. You just have to accept that you don't actually know what you're talking about, most times (And neither do I). But at least I have work you can critique, I can't say the same about you...

ok boys i've got cookies, who wants choco chip? samoa? oatmeal? everyone take one and chill. it's a friggin camera, and yes it may be a beastly brick of aluminum that could kill a puma, let's not use it against one another.

RED isn't Canon, Panasonic, Or any of the other companies who have what we in the general all purpose business industry call: "A Marketing Team". So they had zero clue that they should have released some well shot footage of the Scarlet when they launched. OOPS!

Seriously, yes it's a PITA that we're waiting around for serious footage. Heck, if anyone in the NYC area has one or gets one in just drop me a message and i'll come help you do a proper test, until then i won't hold my breath, i'm more interested in what's brewing in camp canon ;)

Not angry at all. I just take people at their words. And if you take some time to read the Scarlet threads, you will quickly find that lot's of the new members "I feel" are in for a rude awakening. I again invite you to browse EPIC footage on vimeo and tally up footage completely shot at 24p vrs footage that has 120fps or higher over crank. Just go read though the forums over at REDuser about Scarlet and tell me that there aren't A LOT of people who have NOT a CLUE about what they bought. (Look for members with 50 or less posts).
Then a previous poster attaches a picture of Peter Jackson holding an Epic. I'm sorry, even Peter can't use a Scarlet for The Hobbit. He's shooting it at 48fps at 4K and using Epic because of size for making 3D rigs. Are you starting to catch my drift here? RED has gotten so many people on 4K-oolaid it's kinda sad.
If you're going to shoot 4K, do it right and buy an Epic-X or rent it. Too me, it's like buying a V6 mustang to enter drag races with a V8 version. Looks the same, but under the hood they are quite different.

As for "trolling" Rick. Let Rick decide that. I feel that RIck and I are having a discussion, which is the point of having forums like DVXuser to go to. That discussion is based on not only opinion, but science and experience. I like to think that Rick and I investigating, asking questions, finding solutions, and discussing practicality of newly announced cameras.

1:30 secs of footage. From this ground breaking camera. at least 10 of them are in the hands of buyers. I guess time will tell. Go read the REDuser forums. It's fun for a good laugh. "Hey, I'm number XXXXX. I hope I get mine before summer". Or, "Finally I can retire my 7D".
4K-oolaid.
Just got back from Costco. I didn't see any 4K players or monitors there. Oh but Youtube has 4K. Alright, set your computer monitor up to view it. 4K is great for VFX. Sure is. But have a look at this shot on 5dmk2...http://vimeo.com/24982650

Actually, I don't think the images will be exactly the same if you use Epic's higher bit rate to your advantage. Clearly there are reasons when using a higher bit rate is important, or, the Epic wouldn't have them in the first place. THAT to me is the question I'd want to evaluate between both cameras. That is the big difference between the two when talking 24p at 4k. Of course, as you also know, the Scarlet isn't technically shooting 4k of resolution either since a bayer pattern cannot resolve the detail at the same resolution as the bayer pattern. So even in that, it's a compromise if you want real 4k footage.

This old 4k doesn't resolve 4k argument is really not relevant to any finished motion production format. 4k projectors don't resolve 4k either. What Red 4k does is resolve to the same or better resolution than a 4k scan of S35mm film, which was the reason for picking the format in the first place. In most cases your lenses and how you use them are going to be the limiting factor, not the sensor resolution.

Dude, at least contribute to the conversation rather than attacking people. You have youtube that you can go to for character attacks.
We're here to post opinions and share in discussion. WHats that old saying? "Opinions are like A**holes"? Don't be that guy. Until you share your body of work, stop with the attacks of Nuno, who I would be blessed to work for anytime I could.

You're right, Red is Red, we buy a beta camera. and that's the exciting part :)
Anyway, footages are useless. The only solution is to try the cam. Or being confidant. First footages of C300, the shorts ..... everybody was "waaaaaaa so nice", then the second random footage was a cold shower, people started to bash the camera. Then the funny test, and people started to bash the first shorts movies in comparison. until next crappy footage. and so on :)
It was the case with every cam I followed these last 5-6 years. The same trolls, the same fights. But hey, it's always some fun.

come on dustylense, nuno dias is spreading his agressivity all over dvxusers. and I will not make the list of all the bashing your are spreading here against the scarlet. all the "30000$ GH2" and so on. where is your contribution with that?
anyway calm down :) it's just cameras.

You are missing my point. The point being if you have an Epic, you are probably going to shoot at 5k for 24fps. Why would you shoot at 4k? So even at 24fps, they are probably not going to be used the same.

on the other comments....
To claim that Red doesn't understand about sample footage, you must be surely joking right? :) Red has been around long enough now to understand what people expect. They've head PLENTY of time to figure it out. They just might not find it as important to do. Whether they sell cameras today, or in a few months from now when footage starts to come out, if it's good, it will sell itself.

Did Canon have sample footage from the 5D on day one? How did that sell?

It's just different tactics. Given the number of people I've seen buying the Scarlet-X, I think their methods are working pretty well. And also, there are people I VERY MUCH respect who've purchased a Scarlet-X and their work to me speaks for itself. While the Scarlet-X might not work in YOUR use model, it doesn't mean it won't work for others. It just depends on your needs. I *seriously* debated a Scarlet-X for myself and our productions. There is A LOT of good I like about the camera. When people ask me C300/Scarlet-X/F3, I ask them, well tell me, what is it that you want to do? I can't give an answer because they each have different strengths and weaknesses. NO camera is perfect for everyone.

the best method is to imagine owning one of the camera and to wonder if we will regret the other ones. I like the C300, it has some good stuffs but if I buy it I will always look after the scarlet and regret it. I don't feel the same in the other way. Anyway they're all crazy good. And we all know unconsciously which one we want.
The best cam is the one you are comfortable with. I've got mamiya 7II, hasselblads, pentax 67, leica, nikons, RZ67, etc, and I'm always using the same one, because i like the object, i like to handle it, even if it has drawbacks.

I'm not bashing Scarlet. I love that RED has made it. It's only good for competition. It's not the camera for me though. What it has and offerers just won't improve anything I point a lens at. And that is my point of you read though all the posts at REDuser pertaining to Scarlet. Lot's of them think that this camera is going to make them. But then they quickly question the FPS functions and compatibility.
Lots of people have bought this camera (paid around $20,000 and higher and will continue to pay more to use it properly) without much knowledge of what they just invested in. Not to mention the LACK of footage to judge it by. For sure, there are guys that have Epics that bought this camera. As I said, it's the perfect Epic B cam.
This thread is about where is the footage mainly. RED can't even throw some footage up? Then, they say prices will increase after Jan 1st. See what they are doing here? Better get your order in without seeing anything from it before the price increase. Makes you think a bit.
This is my opinion and contribution. I'm discussing with the likes of Rick, Nuno, and many others about the SCARLET. You, just a bunch of 1 liners that go nowhere.
I'm not against the Scarlet. I'm curious of it as there is a definite lack of proven substance pertaining to it, and from the very source itself, that being RED.

Well I've imagined owning a lot of stuff in my life from being a little kid till now, and I can say, I was more disappointed often than not. This happens with a lot of professional equipment for me as well because sometimes, something you assumed would work one way, does not.

The BEST thing to do is wait for the cameras to be rentable and rent one. Try it out before you buy and MAKE SURE it matches your requirements. This is the ONLY way to be sure.

Well, thats part of the thing here. Scarlet prices will go up after Jan 1st. Just how many people have bought Scarlets because of this? LOTS! LOTS of HDSLR converts too.

there is maybe 10 cameras in the wild. the footages are arriving slowly. Tonaci will post some new footages on line this week end. and some others will post too. anyway the majority will have the camera after january or february, the discount is when you order before january. It's always possible to cancel if the footages are not good enough until then and be refund.
and let's not forget that if you think the price is an issue at any point, it's not a camera for you. you're right about the fact that these cameras will not add extra talent to the guys. but if you're comfortable with the price, it can add some beauty and extra value to the work.
obviously nobody should take a credit of put all his money on this cam.
