Red Scarlet Announcement Info

After giving it more thought, it's almost a definite no for me. Having found out about the sensor crop if you shoot below 4k on the Scarlet, I just can't do it. I can't be handling 4k files all the time and although RAW is what I would really be buying the camera for, having to shoot in lower resolutions with a FOV crop is just out of the question. Shooting in 2k would give me a 50% crop on my lens. That's worse then my AF100. That's also what you need to deal with if you want slow-mo.

It's unfortunate, but that one single aspect of the camera alone pushes me out of the game for now. Until I can handle 4k footage with confidence...I'll have to wait. Unless I could work out a proper workflow that wouldn't totally bring my computers to their knees, then I will consider it again. Proxies are obvious but I'll need to look into things more before I'll go for it.

Great camera, great price...it's a winner for sure. :)

Great attitude - not every camera is for every shooter or useful in every situation.

This is really funny, because after all the dust settled that's the conclusion I came up with....But how do you do it without sending customers to your competitors for lenses???
Not sure what you're asking. The camera I envision has a fixed lens. In essence, it's a Panasonic AC160 or HVX250 - including the 13x (22x?) fixed lens - but has a m4/3 chip. I think Panny would sell zillions of those to those of us who have used the DVX100, HVX200, HPX170, etc. for the last decade.

The biggest hurdle I would think is to get a lens with an aperture large enough, without driving the cost through the roof. Where is the engineering/design break point there? They already make the m4/3 chips, and the rest of the camera for that matter.

Where can I find more info related to crop at lower resolutions than 4K. Researching this camera now and I would love to know the pros and cons. I shoot a lot at 1080/2k so the FOV crop is worse than my AF-100? How does that work?

Thanks

Agree with Kyle and HeavyG. Not every camera works for everyone in every situation. Use the tool you have, and know best.

I'm sure Oren Peli would have loved to have shot Paranormal Activity (1) on an Arri 35mm film with a full sound stage and crew, etc. But he didn't have that so he made the best film with what he did.

Same here.

Order placed.

Excellent Matt - Ill be following you closely to watch how the shipped systems perform before I order. Ive had some small (workable) issues with shooting Red in the past, my hope is this system is bullet proof from Day1.

That's what I was thinking of doing. I actually already have an external recorder. So you're saying the crop isn't an issue with an external recorder?

Looking into that now with some epic owners. Will post the info up when I have it.

Kholi, there is no other camera I want to shoot with, or that I want to invest in.

I would not regret shooting an entire film on Scarlets, only renting EPICs for high speed or HDRx, or for 5k acquisition for landscape shots needing that 70mm look. 4kHD is bound to fall on a great spot for REDCODE given the throughput announced for the Scarlet brain. Scarlet is going to be a film camera, with EPIC being an EPIC-film camera... oh that name will never end.
:)

That said, F3 Alexa and film are great! But I wouldn't want to shoot my work on them. Scarlet will have plenty of DR, need very little light, have heaps of resolution, will fit anywhere you need it to, will weight next to nothing, 4kHD is future-proofed which is very nice with 4k coming fast thanks to ESPN and others, and it will cost next to nothing. Not that anyone can buy thirty Scarlets, but for what it does... it is a steal! And it blows away the competition in virtually all measurable ways. RED rocks, I am all about them still, if that is what you are asking me.

I don't mean to offend anyone when I point out that haters will be buying Scarlets, just playfully teasing them. The whole RED sucks, RED rocks thing is over. RED is one of the big ones in pro-camera manufacturing and there is no disputing that. I won't sell my 7D cause I want to shoot BTS on it, but I would never shoot a feature film with anything other than RED. Now if you can make more money with other cameras, heck, that answers that. My $ will be invested into a RED-centric system.

Yeah, it wouldn't be an issue. The SDI/HDMI on the Epic/Scarlet send out a 1080p or 720p downscale from the full sensor. You still have to window for highspeed, though. And, as with other cameras, you'd have to record the slo-mo on camera first, then record it to the external recorder from playback on the camera.

I've successfully recorded off the HD-SDI tap on Epic shows to a Ki Pro. I can't imagine it would be any different with Scarlet. And there you go, 1080p ProRes

Can't wait to get my hands on this thing. Hopefully by the opening of 2012.

And I may have a line on a group buy for the KiPro Mini, which I think would be a good match to the Scarlet (and the C300 for that matter). Anyone interested can PM me.

Awesome, that makes me happy!

Can you point me to the official statement for a Nikon mount option? I'll admit I've only read 2 of the 76 pages here so it's probably right under my nose. Congrats on the purchase!

da you go:

but its still not available and might take months. A friend of mine has one that passes the connections and said it was around 1000.-€ but I forgot the name...so its already available elsewhere.

Good deal, man. EPIC is nice, happy to be able to use such a powerful tool. I feel the same way, although to me Alexa or Film really is the pinnacle at the moment. Canon C300 looks like something close to Alexa.

Either way, there are great tools available at all prices.

Ordered mine today! I feel like I might be #800 or something. I bet they've got a lot sold already. Might have to until summer to get mine ;)

Either way I'm excited for it!

Different strokes for different folks.

I love all the haters in here that don't even know how to work a red camera, most of your complaints are not even complaints because red has already worked it out. They really got their **** covered. You'd be insane to buy any other camera in that price range.

To be fair, red did not really address a lot of that on the website or in the announcement, but they would have to write a book to cover everything.

Bottom line how often are you really going to shoot in anything other than 4k 24fps? I have an HVX200 and rarely use slo-mo. Great to have when you needs it, but really, how often you going to use 60fps or HDRx. Only when you need it and a couple hoops to jump through is not too bad for the ability.

Congrats, man!!!! I'll be a bit behind you. I'll get in before Dec. 31, so maybe I'll be this time next year? lol
