Red Scarlet Announcement Info

How can you offer Scarlet-X at this price when EPIC is so much more?
Data rates and processing power. ASICs that weren't fast enough for EPIC… just became a gold mine for Scarlet. This, and board component reduction, allows us to lower the data rate throughput and significantly reduce our costs over volume.

How much does Scarlet weigh?
Exactly the same as EPIC.

Busted.

16-bit RAW Processing : Compression choices of 18:1 to 3:1
1-12 fps 5K FF
1-30 fps 4K HD
1-48 fps 3K HD
1-60 fps 1080p HD
1-120 fps 1K

So no 120fps for 1080p, but 720p

LMAO!!! Ah man. Too funny. JVC is so far out of the picture in this game it's not even in the same room where the picture is hanging

To be fair, JVC always seemed to position themselves for the ENG market. This whole 4K large chip cinema thing never was their focus.

Scarlet offers a lot of nice features for a good price. But I don't think Red kicked Canon's butt at all. In fact I think they actually helped Canon out.

Just think, for every Scarlet sold with Canon mount (and that will probably be the majority of cameras sold), Canon will probably sell at least 3 or 4 lenses. Even if the camera buyer already has Canon lenses, he'll probably buy 1 or 2 more. Lenses usually have higher margins than camera bodies, so Canon will make a killing. They should send Jannard a thank you letter!

They already can send it now, together with Arri, Lomo, Zeiss and tons of others cinema glass, lights, rigs, FF etc. equipment manufacturers. Remember there is already 10 000 Red Ones in the wild!

The only thing is that I did not find one person in many forum who said "yes I am buying one on January 2012" I could not count how many have already put a deposit on the scarlet. It is not a true market analysis, but I guess that there will be much more scarlet sales than Canon one at its current price point. If somebody does not want to work in raw, I don't see any reason for him to buy the canon compared to the Sony F3, which has much better spec in almost every way.

The C300 does produce some very nice imagery, but these are Hollywood production, with all the crews and expertise to show the camera at its best.

My Question, how do you see the market shaping as from now. Do you see a Sony F3 coming with the S-log at the $ 13 000 price tag, or even lower for example. Any idea?

Ahhhhh, lovely. I have a clear upgrade path from my AF100 when funds allow and Scarlets ship.

I look forward to hiring a Scarlet and checking it out, with a view to ownership if the delivered products work as advertised and arrive in a timely manner.

An EPIC with a lower data rate and much lower price but still RAW = win for me.

Canon C300 doesn't offer me anything like enough over the AF100 to justify the price. Scarlet should do.

What a great night for digital data acquisition and image quality though! :-0

Cheers, Hywel

I've looked over the 300 shorts and none of them have struck me like the F3 short here did at its announcement: http://vimeo.com/16898584

50MB/s is not enough bandwidth, and I feel like we're seeing that in the vimeo encodes for the 300 shorts. Just seems to be falling apart in many places (sword looks worst in this sense).

I don't know. Too me at least 2 of those Canon shorts look better than that F3. But their also way bigger production.

As far as Scarlet, it's all there, now just need to see some footage.

After years of being a RED denier - I just successfully placed an order for a Scarlet with all the trimmings (in PL mount). Had been taking the wait and see approach, was on the fence about buying an F3 but the announcement last night had a bunch of the ad agency guys I work for all 'abuzz'. So if I want to keep a leg up in the competitive ad world I had to announce this morning that I had ordered a Scarlet...

However I expect that my AF100's will still be very busy over the next year - That's because some of the budgets won't really have room for a RED Raw post schedule. Mind you; maybe recording to a Samurai (or one of the other ext recorders) may produce great results and be more post friendly?

G.

P.s. Does this mean I have to check in at reduser? That site makes me feel 'icky'
