C100: Red Ring Broken

I decided to pick up a Canon 24-105 used on CL and it is in mint condition except the red ring is broken (but still on the lens). Totally obsessing over nothing here but I am tempted to try to glue it together. Big mistake? Let it go?

Who cares? Sure try to glue it, but if it doesn't change the way it's supposed to work then let it go. You'll just have to convince the person you sell it to it's unimportant if they're using it to try to get a cheaper price.

I drew all over my 70-200 and I can still occasionally make nice images with it.

Wow, that's seen some action... Focus ring functions fine. It's just aesthetic and as you mentioned, resale.

I will never be able to sleep if I don't ask why? Why? Art project? Sleep scribbling?

The red ring broke on my 24-105 too (but stayed on like yours). Canon fixed it on the next CPS service by exchanging the ring against a new one.

On days when I'm shooting Canon, I wear these socks:

there's something off about this pair of socks cos the color patterns don't match.. its most likely gray market .. if you look closely, in one, the part where the toes are, is black and gray in the other

@puredrifting, I drew all over it when I got it because I wasn't planning on ever selling it and I use the lens because of the glass inside. I also was shooting a documentary in Hanoi and it helped that the lens looked banged up. Thieves know the light coloured canon lenses with a red ring are worth more. People will come back with whatever hypothetical on client perception etc. and while important, I've obviously drawn the line somewhere and something like pen on a lens isn't going to matter. I wrote some BTS article years ago and someone in the comments could not get over the "vandalism". It's as if they'd only buy canon L lenses to take photos of them. I probably wouldn't draw all over a set of Cooke's though...

Sorry for the derail scorsesefan!

No worries. It's got plenty of character, anyway. I'm just kind of OCD about my gear (among other things)...

The entire pattern/color scheme is different on both socks...or they are two different socks.

Thanks for letting me know, I am a naturally curious person, I had to know. When people do things like this I have to ask why or it will drive me crazy. I could never do something like that to my 70-200 2.8. In Hanoi or an area like it, I would probably instead coat it with Gaffer tape and mark up the tape, make sure some strings of tape were hanging from it, etc. But it's your lens, of course, you do with it what you will. I may do this for my trip to Brazil at the end of March, several people have warned me about theft there, but not sure exactly under what circumstances I will be shooting. I find when in sketchy areas, carrying around the camera, lens and a 2-3 foot long aluminum monopod with a nice, weighty head on it can discourage many who give me "the look". Happened to me in Paris on the Metro, I had a 5D MKIII and a 70-200 2.8 lens, was hopping from stop to stop to shoot images. I was definitely targeted and ended up drawing some blood to keep my property, I still wonder if I gave the guy brain damage. Always nice to have something steel or aluminum you can swing around when being targeted.

I had an audio guy grab a C-stand one night on a college campus when some kids obviously didn't quite comprehend what was going on and started jerking our power cords/lights out of the outlet. After a 275lb+ guy with a large metal stand started making his way towards them, apologies came quickly and they even plugged the lights back in...
