FS7: Red Raven and FS7

15K for a F65? wow.

I was at the movies with my wife for Luc Besson's "Lucy" It not nessesary to discuss the plot ;-) but I saw many scenes where I thought that was a brilliant shot. Sharp, fantastic colors, a vivid scenery almost 3D even it was not.. I was so impressed that I researched IMDB about the tech specs: it was Besson's first digital movie and he choose the F65 over the RED Epic which he used for car shots and some Alexa shots.
Rafael, can't wait to see some shots from you ;-)

Yeah, I haven't seen Lucy in a theater, but would like to. Oblivion and Winter Sleep and Ex-Machina and others were what drew me to the camera. I can't compare myself to Luc Besson, but I will try to share whatever images I can. :)

I have got some projects in the pipeline, so hopefully the director won't mind me sharing a bit here with yinz (Pittsburgh for yall)

But that's for a different thread.

Rafel, where did you score the F65? If I can get one for that price I will but it, otherwise I might give the Raven or new Scarlet a go.

Probably I'm missing some important details as I haven't studied it - but am I correct that Raven won't have internal ND's , that the sensor is smaller than micro 4/3's with no ability to use a speed booster because it is EF mount and the Audio will be a PITA? If so for the life of me I don't understand what you guys are salivating about. What EF lens will you use to get a really wide shot and isn't that what you often want with a small camera? Can you adapt micro 4/3's lenses?
So what if it has a great codec. Unless there's more to this story than I know - meh.

IMO F55 / 5 doesn't cut it .....for me dragon/ weapon , F65 or Alexa is where it is at right now.

Used Alexa packages are out there for similar dollars but generally with huge hours, used F65 prices seems to have far less hours on the clock. So maybe a better buy ?

Scarlet weapon sounds interesting but I don't expect it to be cheaper than a used 65 or Alexa and given what's happening with depreciation costs with new camera systems buying used is looking more attractive everyday.

4.5k near s35mm and Offhollywood making a cheaper Audiocentric EnG module.

Do you know the actual sensor size of the 4.5 crop and is that 4:3 or 16:9? When Raven was released there were saying it was close to S35 which wasn't really the case but closer to M4/3 and the same size as GH2 (oversized M4/3).

That is great news that 3rd parties are coming out with more affordable accessories. The cost of these i/o modules makes sense for the Dragon/Epic/Weapon but is a lot harder to swallow on a sub $10K camera.

Personally I'm of the mindset that I won't own any camera that can't be paid off under 2 years (ideally a year). Anything more is a rental. The FS7 has made great financial sense for my company and should more than satisfy my clients for another 2 years.

Thanks for the info. Yeah by my calculation its very slightly bigger than micro 4/3's ( I was wrong above). But again what lens do you use for a wide shot?

I'm still waiting to see some direct comparisons between FS7/5/55 and Dragon or Epic.

The 4.5k sensor is a 2.13:1 sensor with a 1.62x crop compared to FF. For 16:9 or UHD the cropfactor will be 1.96x.

That's great about the crop factor not being 4/3rds anymore if you ask me.

Now if Raven can just get interchangeable mounts, I'd place my pre-order today.

I think I'll make the Scarlet Weapon my PL Mount camera of choice. I think the Raven is an excellent B cam for Weapons/Dragons, and a gateway drug but I doubt very much it can replace an FS7 for versatility.

That combo would cover pretty much anything you are asked to shoot I imagine.

Ben any clue what the "new" Scarlet is going to be? If current Scarlet comes with Weapon sensor and PL mount, really, what more can a "newer" Scarlet offer?
