Red pixelation problem

I'm not sure if any one else is having this issue.

Ive notice that in squeeze mode or letter box mode the camera has trouble with the reds. Now in the editing software it is not noticeable.(I use Adobe 1.5) But when I export to avi or compress it to mpeg the reds come out pixelly. Now is it something I'm doing or do any of you have this problem?

you can see what I mean in the club performance

I use a DVX 100B

Apply a chroma blur in post and it should alleviate your problem. Red is a tough color for DV to compress and this is the result.

I see what you're talkin about Kid but that's not how it should look.
Seems like a problem with how it's compressed?

I shoot exclusively in squeeze mode and record a lot of club footage that uses that same red lighting. The best workflow for me on exporting is using Apple Pro res. Look at that footage and see if the problem is there. If not then you know it's how you're compressing it. Also check your original capture scratch footage and see if it's in that ... that'll help troubleshoot where the problem lies.

Robinette is correct. Yes it is a compression issue but not export compression. It is the 4:1:1 native DV compression that causes this kind of artifacting. It happens with rich blue hues sometimes too.

Also, edit in a higher quality format. I think you also have to make sure that your Premiere project's settings utilize a codec which, once the chroma blur is applied, will "keep" the blur upon output. If you're editing in NTSC-DV, the blockiness will return every time because it's endemic to the color space. At least, that's what happens in Final Cut Pro. YMMV.

So, change to DVC-PRO or whatever floats your boat, THEN apply the chroma blur. (Hope I am right about this - someone else who knows better, please chime in.)

Guys thank you every much for all you input. This is something I've been dealing with for a while and I will apply all you useful tips. It sucks to have great footage and to have it get ruined by some technical issue but hopefully there will always be way to over come them.

DVX Rocks!
