RED One MX vs PANASONIC AF101 vs CANON 5D

The great thing about opinion is everyone has one. Respect everyones right to an opinion and discussions like these can move forward.

Well this isnt a vs clip anyway, so wheres the ability to draw any comparison from anything? It seems to be a RED MX using the older colour science and the levels on the cameras dont match i.e. it could have meaning if it was shot to say the skintones were set to 70 ire on a waveform etc as clearly the highest is exposure on the AF100 is higher than the 5DMKII. As in if you read say the shots Pappas pasted above check the waveform.

But the shooter in this case shot this for his own purposes so it most likely suits the his needs for that demonstration.

EDIT I just took a look on a waveform - AF100 exposure is much higher than the 5dmkii or red in these images. Skin on the 5dmkII is around 60 ire comapared to 90's for the AF100. Big difference - its not a straight all set at the same exposure.

Honestly astigmatic that seems to be the same old story when it comes to a lot of the AF videos I've seen lately. Not saying you are wrong though.

A friend of mine has been shooting with his AF100 for about two weeks and tonight I am going to try it out.Highlight handling and DR are the AF100's weak points.
It's not matter if you have a point in the frame in which it's hot/overexposed- it's how well the sensor handles that, and rolls off with it. The AF100 does not roll off good.
It acts just like my HVX200 did ( a 6 year old camera ). The DSLR's are trying to embody how film deals with it. The Video cameras are not. That's why the AF100 still is plagued by the
video camera design that is out dated IMO.

Pappas do you have an AF100? If not, then I'd like to share my opinions on how out of date NASA's space shuttles are and how mt Toyota Corolla can get into space just as easy.

based on my tests, panasonic's b press or low knee is similar to canon's gamma
shooting cine D and overexposing isnt ideal.

bottomline both can look filmic if the operator knows what the hell he is doing.

pappas:
use low knee & bpress if you want something similar to canon's gamma
cine D has a totally different behavior. its gamma is more s-like which is ideal for controlled situations
dont go testing af100 without even knowing its capabilities. surely youd just butcher it.

OK getting close to a thread closure now. I always go by this rule - if I feel emotion about something Im posting (in relation to cameras) better not to post, if I feel the need to undermine someone elses opinion - better not to post. Please consider the DVXuser guidelines :)

Thanks- I'll make a note of those settings. I know the camera has been tweaked to perform good already. So I will keep it
within what the camera can do.. As for build, I've heard nothing but praise for the AF100..

Guys, the camera handles highlights fine.

What you do is shoot with lower saturation, and add a little curve in post. Besides, everyone LOVES to grade, isn't hat part of the fun? So no worries:

Untouched on top, Graded on bottom: And Notice the blown out wall behind the Lava lamp. Big difference in transition and the nasty af100 overexposure disappears. And the result, especially in this very low, uncontrolled environment looks half decent!

disclaimer: Downsizing image created a little aliasing and focus is not spot on... Just using this as a very rough example.

The best camera is the one that fits in your budget and serves the subject matter most appropriately.

After much time on this forum and others, I have come to the realization that this is the only sane conclusion. It should be made the moniker of all moderators here, just so that everyone get's to see it a little more often.

Just got home after shooting with the AF100 tonight. Shot with various lenses of mine including anamorphic. As I thought the AF100 is Solid, well built and has a tough feel in the hands. Reminds me of a Panaflex body ( just mini ) without the magazine of course. Like the footage I got and saw. The layout is nice. The SW GUI is well designed and thought out.. The AF100 is a cool camera.
