RED @ NAB NY Today

Red held two demos at NAB NY today...

The footage was brief but unbelievable on a bigger screen! (16'x8') Captured in uncompressed RAW at 323MB per second, with a refrigerator sized raid disk array attached. As Ted pointed out, at 4K 60fps, it will capture at approx. 900MB+ a second!
I'll be curious to see what footage will look like in Redcode RAW at 17MB per second, direct to a 32G+ Redflash card, or a Red-Drive on location.

All interior shots, mostly static CU's, (except for the Porsche), but the blacks! Many clearly delineated levels of the most beautiful blacks!
High contrast head shots, amazing detail, no pixels, no artifacts, just clean.

The image quality is just amazing for that price point. I'm still shaking my head...

I got over to the presentation today myself. Sadly, no new information to be learned. They were just showing the IBC presentation.

On the plus side, people are not lying when they say the online movies are nothing in comparison to the 4k projection. The dynamic range and sharpness are amazing. Ted had a group of about 12 people stand right next to the screen while they played the footage and the close-up people said they saw no pixels. One guy remarked that it was like looking at a 8x10 print close up, the image just looks smooth.

On the negative side, I'm pretty sure Ted commented that probably you will only get the camera body for the 17k (no lcd, evf, media, or battery) but reassured everyone that the accessories would be priced in line with the camera body. I think this is a slight modification from what we've seen online here from Stuart English but I'm not really complaining although I wasn't planning on dropping another 2k for a Anton Bauer or IDX battery kit right off the bat.

I have to say I left the theatre today totally convinced this thing can really and truly deliver the goods. Hopefully REDCODE will do the sensor justice.

Yeah, LCD and battery ship with camera, otherwise how the hell would you use it? I'm sure this is one of those chinese whisper mixups that will get out of control unless it's nipped in the bud right now, so I'm calling it as false.

I seriously hope to hell this is not the case, myself. Someone asked about needing a lens or other accessories, is it just the body, etc.

Maybe Ted mispoke but, I swear to you the first thing off the lips of the leader of rebellion in response to the question was "no lcd...".

On the other hand, he also mentioned that people are really active on the boards and if you look at the online stuff you probably know more about it than he does right now. ;)

lordnumberzero is right Ted said the 17,500 was just for the camera body without any of the accessories....scary to me - also could not get conformation on the Histogram and waveform in camera....that scared me a little bit, but indeed the footage was amazing....

I believe you're thinking about the EVF as well. Jim has clarified many times that the $17,500 figure includes the LCD display (or whatever technology they're deciding to go with), a battery, and the onboard flash. Extra is the hard drive, optional EVF, spare battery, and other accessories like the cage.

Perhaps this won't be the case for non-reservation holders (no prices are guaranteed after the reservations close), but I am pretty confident that RED will hold up to the information we've received thus far.

Oh but please tell me you guys aren't reversing course and making the Red reserves pay for the LCD and battery separate from the main package! My Dad and I are barely able to afford the initial package so I really hope you guys can keep it in.

I was there today as well.

I was also hoping for some new footage, at least something outdoors. But I must say that the images looked fantastic on the big screen.

I do have a feeling though that once all the basic accessories are added up, the price tag will increase quite a bit. But overall, for the quality, the price ain't too bad. I know if I were to buy one, I'd better find some rich clients to hire me for gigs, or fund my projects.

Either way, I'm gonna wait to see how this thing develops before laying down any cash.

Accessories status is still TBD. When we have more to say officially, we will, and I'm sorry if that will take some time as we're just way too busy with the camera to figure things out.

Really? I've always taken this post as pretty much being final:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=56562

It's by Jarred, confirmed by Stuart and titled What's included in the $17,500. Jim's post doesn't seem to suggest that it's subject to change or anything so at least when the thread was posted everyone at Red was happy with the package. Can't see that you get any straighter than that tbh lol? Is this a u-turn? I sincerely hope not because if it were, the battery and LCD or similar would add a hefty chunk onto the price of a RedOne which would be nothing but a huge shame. I really hope this isn't so because I can imagine a few smug people at other forums suggesting that the price is already escalating.

If the package you get for $17,500 is not already locked down then I simply cannot see why that post would've been created???

The footage is really incredible, I was one of the guys that stood right up close, when I took of my glasses (nearsighted -6.0) and held my eyes an inch or so away from the screen, I could see tiny pixels changing smoothly through the entire spectrum, but no noise, grain or other artifacts.

I also stopped by the DVS guys that do color correction in realtime on 4K. They showed footage of Mystic India a Sony produced 4K film scan and some samples of the Dalsa camera that they had been working on. It was viewed on an almost 4K (3850) IBM monitor and it was marvelous to see.

I thought that maybe the increased resolution would require retouching, but it is true as Graeme said in another thread that it is not the detail that is annoying, it is the artificial sharpening on lower quality HD equipment. These three different ways of capturing and displaying all have different flavours of color and tonality but it all leaves me with a warm fuzzy feeling in the stomach. In the Sony stuff there was an image of a sea of people with a maybe a thousand candles all sharp and defined, the Dalsa had every sand grain clearly visible as the cowboy lay dead, and Red's Porsche and bubbles are just clean smooth creamy and stable.

Two hours later I went to the movies, the digitally projected ads in the beginning was unwatchable, the previews where grainy and before the films story got a hold of me, for the first twenty minutes or so, I kept thinking the projector was out of focus.

I agree with the previous posts, it was pretty clear by Jarred, Jim, Stuart, etc. that the lcd and battery came with the base package. If we have to buy those seperate then that would be a very sneaky way to raise the base package for us reserves. Suddenly I could be looking at a $20k package. Jim has made it clear that reserve gets you a price lock. But if suddenly the LCD and battery were yanked, he'd be technically keeping his word, but that would be pretty underhanded. Now Jim is a stand up guy, so hopefully he'll come here and put this all to bed. It seems to the the re-clarification is that this news (LCD and battery seperate) only applies to non-reserves who buy the camera after launch.
