RED: motion TIFFs?

Will RED record in TIFFs? If RED recorded in something like motion TIFFS like consumer digital cameras record in motion JPEG, how many fps could RED do at 2K? I am not so interested in RAW. TIFF is good enough. JPEG is ok, but not as good as a TIFF. I am just wondering about compression. Digital SLRs can take a lot of TIFFs real quick, but not 30 fps. To get 30, 60, or even 120 fps, does RED record in TIFFs or some more compressed format. Is there a GOP (intra frame compression) to be able to record at 30 fps. What is the max fps that REd can shoot RAW pics at 4K, and for how long can ot keep up this rate? I would like to know more about the limits of the RED ONE concerning frame rates and compression. Thanks.

The data rate for 60fps 4k TIFFs at 12 bits would probably (since they would have to be converted to 16 bit) be around 200-400 megabytes a second. The quality would be no better than RAW, which has a much lower data rate. I don't see the reason anyone would want this.

Tiffs would be 3 times the file size for no benefit over RAW in terms of picture quality, and infact, you'd get better results post processing the RAW. Given at full whack, the camera produces about 1GB of data per second, and that with a tiff, that would more than triple - what on earth are you going to record it on??

thanks

thanks

Thanks for educating me. I was operating under the misconception that TIFFs were smaller in file size than RAW. Sorry.

Maybe luki can answer my question about TIFFs and REDCODE.
I read the post by Luki about preparing footage for IBC.
He didn't mention using REDCODE. He mentioned using TIFFs.
Now I am very confused. Graeme made it sound like RED was not going to use TIFFs. Has Jim decided to scrap REDCODE? Is REDCODE not ready yet? Will the production model RED use TIFFs, REDCODE, or both? Will REDCODE be better, faster, and smaller (file sizes) than TIFFs used for IBC?

RED workflow (how we prepared the Red Footage for IBC)
"The post path to get those images was:

1) Record off the camera and onto disk.

James M - part of the Oakley/RED production team - was the DP for the shots. I actually saw most of them being done, so can attest to the the fact that they were recorded directly off the camera and onto disk. There was no "funny business" with any of the shots. They are all pure RED. Everybody was a little nervous lighting around one of Jannard's 959s (the white porsche at the end of the sequence) but other than that, it was all good.

2) Debayer / color matrix images

The original images off disk were greyscale 16-bit TIFF at 4980x2560. The sensor is Super35mm -- 1:9 at 5K. After processing the images, we had 5K RGB 16-bit TIFF."

The images were RAW.. Luki recieved the images as Tiffs, after they went went through a RED CINE process.

Energon cubes.

I'm taking a safe bet that the images captured from the sensor thus far were taken directly from the chip to a huge drive array. Probably uncompressed 4900 pixel RAW files.

All the fancy algorithms (REDCODE and such) and circuits that will end up in the camera are probably still under development. So RED created tifs from the RAW files using an early REDCINE prototype (which Graeme stated somewhere), demosaicing them and sending them through Jims color matrix. The resulting tifs were sent to the Scratch system.

*EDIT* my post crossed Jarred's

Barend... your right on the money :)

What??? You mean I was sitting on it all that time? I was wondering where it went, and now it turns out I was right on it...

Sorry... couldn't pass this one up.

Energon Cubes

WesVasher,

Dude, do you know how rare energon cubes are!?!?!?! That was the whole reason for the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons.
