There actually is an ecliptical format for movies known as Omnimax! The entire movie wraps around you and you're surrounded by film wherever you look. It's an awesome experience! From my knowledge, there are only a handful of Omnimax theaters in existence, but one of them is in San Diego (I think it was the first, actually), and that's where I grew up. So I was fortunate to see several Omnimax movies in my childhood and teens. Wiki has a somewhat small entry about it that's lumped into their IMAX page, but does have a little more information if you're interested:

Here's a pretty cool picture of an omnimax theater, too, though obviously it's only showing you a fraction of the room. The projector is insane!

Anyway, just food for thought in case you've never heard of it! :)
Haakon, many thanks for the info! Actually when I was a kid I lived in Toronto for one year and I saw a documentary (about a volcano exploding) in a white semi spherical hall in the Ontario Lake. I remember that the projection was on the concave surface inside the dome that was covering my peripheral vision but I don’t remember the shape of the projection and I don’t know if it was IMAX or OMNIMAX (IMAX Dome). Many years later I saw some concerts on TV from that hall (I don’t know its name) maybe someone from Canada can tell.
Sorry for this OT post.

Thanks a lot for the visual explanation. It is a *lot* clearer to me now. I get what you and proteus are saying now and really appreciate you taking the time to put that together... I was able to go back and read the posts before mine and make sense of what was being discussed. As I am sure were many of the others blessed with low functioning brains like mine.

power to you. We the stupid salute you (albiet with the wrong arm and accidentally punching ourselves in the face.)
