I think the Komodo would need at least half a stop more DR than the Pocket 4K to tempt me.

Yes, there are some design features I prefer about the Komodo, including RF mount which is awesome.

But I think I would use the 2 cameras for the same purpose. And people have now convinced that the P4K is adequately reliable. And a Komodo shooting package is at least 3-4x the cost of the P4K, so it would have to bring in more work than the Pocket, which I'm not sure would happen.

What do y'all think?

I think the space is pretty heated up right now. Once the R5 drops it will be a difficult choice between them all. To me, the main difference will be if you need AF and IBIS. This will lead one to choose the R5 or S1H over all of the rest. No need for auto stuff and the choice becomes more difficult. The BM or Z-Cam cameras are tough to beat for value. Then again, if the R5 really has some follow through, you get a pro stills camera to boot. The RED will be a great choice but their batteries and other accessories always cost a lot, so they will be the most expensive option in this little circle.

I largely agree - but I don't think that the S1H has usable autofocus.

Also, the Komodo will record to CFast cards and use Canon batteries, so that helps.

But I think that the Pocket 4K manages to undercut all the rest on price, including the Z Cam E2. Interesting times.

The Pocket 4K has a micro 4/3 sensor. And it shows. Personally, I think the image looks like crap. Blotchy color and poor sensitivity.
S35 and Full Frame rule the roost now. I would tend to think the Pocket 6K is a more viable product compared with the others.

I dunno. The P4K to P6K comparisons I've seen look remarkably similar and I like the color on both. I don't personally need 6K or want those bitrates. The 6K can't be speedboosted. It's a tough choice. As for sensitivity - I think the P4K is the same sensor as the GH5S and can probably work in similar lighting levels as the A7III and such once you speedboost it.

I know nothing of this camera

nD? 10+ bit?

Decent AF?

The others omit one of these criticals?

No ND. Only R3D 16-bit raw recording AFAIK. Basic one-touch PDAF that can do focus pulls from a touch-screen while recording. I'm sure they'll work to improve the AF but I doubt it will ever achieve parity with Canon/Sony.

Why CFast instead of CFast Express? I demand answers.

Yeah I thought they should have used CFexpress as well since it's the card of the future. The BM and Z-cams use CFast too though so no points deducted in comparison.

I was going to get a Komodo, but then I realized there was no micro HDMI port on the side. pass.

Haha yes I know you hate HDMI on the side (although the P4K is full-size not micro). Yes, the Komodo has a BNC coming out the bottom of the back.

There are some superior design features of the Komodo. I don't think they would keep me from rocking out with the Pocket, though. For me it comes down to dynamic range and sensitivity. Tie goes to the Pocket because of the lower price. But maybe I'm wrong. Unless the Komodo kicks the Pocket's ass, it's almost like - why not save a bit more and spring for a Mavo Edge? Sure it's 2x the price of the Komodo and 9x the price of the P4K, but it has practically every design feature you could ask for.

I dont like the BM P cameras as they are so wide.. too wide for a Movi Pro which is my gimbal... which can take most reds or Alexa mini or FS7 and most likely all the canons.

Honestly, owning an FS7, which has 4k60 and ND but no AF Im really disintereted in any new launches without AF, ND and Ideally HFR that is not a step back from the FS7.

I bought the F3 to get ND after the FS100 - it would be a pain to go back a decade odd.

If I want a small camera with 4k Ive got my GH4 which even has a basic screen onboard - if find no screen a PITA I have a BMCmicro, but never use it because I get the same image from the GH4 and dont have to set up a screen - but no ND or AF on the GH4.

Some specs for those who want them:

New 6K Sensor that features global shutter and rolling shutter modes as well as Phase Detect Auto Focus (Jarred Land has said that they might make it global shutter only)
Max Resolution: 6144×3240 (full sensor with DCI aspect ratio)
Dynamic Range: Less than half a stop below Helium
Max Framerate: 6K FF @ 40fps, 6K WS @50fps, 4k @60fps shouldn’t be a problem, there should be 48fps modes available, 2K @120fps
Anamorphic Support: Yes, but it will not be officially available till around two months after initial release
Codec Support: Internal Compressed RAW (REDCODE RAW, R3D), unknown if other codecs are supported as of now
Lens Mount: Integrated Canon RF Mount. Jarred said they are doing the EF protocol first, so native support for RF lenses will most likely not be there at launch.
Media Type: CFast 2.0 (body features a media slot compartment w/ door). Jarred later said they are also testing CFexpress for future use, but for Komodo they decided to stick with CFast 2.0.
Power Options: Dual slot Canon BP style batteries (various capacities) with hot swap and ability to run off one battery, DC input 12V (LEMO), Lower power draw than DSMC2
Camera Control: Integrated Touch Screen, On Camera Buttons, Some sort of Smartphone Interface, WiFi Control, EXT Port
Monitoring: Top Side Pogo Cableless Display Tech, 4K 6G or 12G SDI Out
Audio: Mic In 3.5mm jack, Headphone Jack, Internal Scratch Mic
Camera Cooling: It appears there’s an internal heat sink and fan w/ vent
Form Factor: < 4x4x4″ with magnesium/aluminum alloy body
Body Weight: < 2lbs
Buttons/Indicators: on/off switch, power/status indicator, record button, tally light, menu, menu selection up/down, funtion set, playback (probably toggle), 2X eject buttons for batteries, media compartment open
Wireless Camera Inteface/Control: WiFi w/ Antenna
Mobile Phone Support: Android and iOS
Rigging: 1/4″-20 around Pogo, 4X M4 around front of camera, 1X M3 for focus hook, general base plate form factor of DSMC2-style bodies

According to Phil Holland on the other forum, there are still features to be revealed.

Gotcha - yeah the main appeal of the Komodo is internal RAW, low price, and small enough for my Ronin-S.

You can use a vari-ND filter with EF lenses with the EF-RF rear filter adapter. But if you want the best AF, look elsewhere.

I saw a rumor that a fixed-lens sony mirrorless camera will have ND. Maybe the A7S3 will too? That could be your new B cam

Is there anywhere that's actually listing the full specs/details on Komodo yet? I can't see anything on Red's website.

Haha no the full specs have not been released yet - we just have a compilation of teaser info from Jarred Land's reduser posts

Yep I do see that as quite a big deal, because you are (uniquely for R mount) almost getting built in ND on a smaller than FS7 camera -the same is of course true canon R mount cameras.

THe same would be possible on Sony E (with FF lenses) and Nikon G to Z but no one has done it.

If a half-stop less DR than Helium is true, it would put the Komodo on par with the Sony A7RIII. I've worked with those files and they are impressive. Noticeably more DR than the P4K IMO

Less than half a stop. And remember, that is in global shutter mode.

Now we'll just have to wait and see how Red will blow this opportunity.

I was interested in this as a B-cam for my C500 MkII, but then Canon released the C300MkIII. This looks like a glorified Blackmagic camera but not as user friendly.

Such a strange way to market the thing. Surely most people check out from paying attention once they can't get a clear picture of what the thing actually is?
