RED Komodo to start limited shipping soon for $6k

I was interested in this as a B-cam for my C500 MkII, but then Canon released the C300MkIII. This looks like a glorified Blackmagic camera but not as user friendly.

yeah, the C3/500 is a nice one two. Same bodies, same colour science and workflows. same aks. seems rather ideal.

looking forward to seeing more of your work when this all is over.

Such a strange way to market the thing. Surely most people check out from paying attention once they can't get a clear picture of what the thing actually is?

Lol. Yes.

I had heard "Komodo" mentioned, but given Red's random naming conventions, I had no idea what it was. A sensor, a camera, a trade in program, a DSMC ecosystem? Finally saw something about it and of course...announced in July of last year. Still not available. Still no firm details. Probably not available to actually buy for several more months.

It would be interesting if Red can discipline itself like Blackmagic did and announce cameras right before they ship, or the day they ship, instead of teasing stuff for months or more than a year before actually having anything to show.

I respect what they've done overall, but after getting burned with the original Scarlet "betrayal" and then watching them implode with Raven shutting down other product lines when I was trying to get a Scarlet-W, I don't really trust them. ;) Oh, and I bought a Hydrogen. Yeah...

Good luck to Komodo I guess.

If you put a dragon sensor in the komodo it would then be a komodo dragon.

I can't see anything on Red's website.

RED's website? What the hell are you talking about?

Jarred does is product releases to "Insta Friends" and "Facebook hang arounds".

I wish that I was joking.

Think about that for a second. Not the 'I wish I was joking part', but the way RED releases their info.

They've got red.com and they've got reduser.net. And Jarred posts to IG and FB. I don't think I can get over that.

And now that some information is officially out there, if you go to the thread 'KOMODO' on reduser.net, it's not like the first post is a sticky with collected information that trickled in—it's still Jarred's tease of what the camera is not.

I know nothing of this camera

nD? 10+ bit?

Decent AF?

The others omit one of these criticals?

Uses Canon EF to RF mount adapter with built in vari-ND. With a PL mount adapter, a Kippertie Revolva is an option. Nothing built in to this tiny 4" cube body. Fixed RF mount with full electronic Canon lens controls.
Nobody knows about AF quality yet. First Red sensor with phase detect AF pixels. Jarred said it could take them awhile to optimize it for speed.

Internal recording to C-fast2 will be 16 bit Redcode raw only. Compression rates TBD. 40fps@6k, 60fps@4k, 120fps@2k, GLOBAL SHUTTER. CF Express arrived too late to be used for this design, isn't necessary to meet data rates, and runs too hot for such a small body.
External recording @ 4K60fps via 12G SDI. At least 10bit output, but SDI formats haven't been announced.

There are no official specs yet. Jarred has been leaking the specs his and other production prototypes can reliably meet as they firm up, but the color science and firmware are still in development. Won't see the official specs until the camera is available to order.

16 stops + DR and high frame rates with a global shutter is definitely a major technical breakthrough in sensor design.

Yeah nobody but RED fanboys like the way they do things. I also find the skulls hilarious, plus the fact that they're charging more if you want your camera in WHITE! Nice codec, though.

16 stops + DR

I hope Cinema5D can get their hands on one so that we can verify that DR in ImaTest SNR2. Would be interesting to see what number it spits out.

There are many ways to measure DR and my feeling is that RED often quotes 'patch range' which is no. of detectable patches. I prefer C5D's more conservative numbers that take noise, or SNR, into account.

Yeah, there's no way that it has that much usable DR.

RED says Komodo has a half-stop less DR than Helium. Cinema5D tested helium against Alexa and found Alexa had 1.5 stops more in the highlights, but that the helium had cleaner shadows (i'm not sure by how much).

Dxomark tested Helium, and if Komodo has a half-stop less DR than Helium, it would have 14.7ev according to the dxomark scale - which would put it right on par with the Sony A7RIII (which would be awesome IMO).

Definitely not a fan of the fan-boy culture(some of the posts are like little smitten girls and some talk about the camera like it's a real live animal). But to be fair, last July they never said hey look what we're about to release. They just said hey look what we're working on. And I know they royally screwed the pooch last year, but as an outsider, to me it seem's Jarred has been pretty straightforward, forthcoming and transparent with the development.
