RED Komodo Global Shutter(mode)

Did anyone else catch this post from Jarred?

You should be good then. Pretty safe to say after beating on the stormtrooper all day today you can expect full sensor 6k 40fps, 6k WS @ 50fps. Which means 4k @60fps shouldn't be a problem, but I have not actually tested that yet. And yes, that's all in global shutter mode.

Don’t know if this means that it can go in and out depending on frame rate and rez or if it just means that the readout is fast enough to act like a global shutter or what, since he’s talking about a pre-production “shake-down” model.

Did somebody say "global shutter"?

I haven't been keeping up with Red. So I don't know what camera Jarred is talking about.

Red has had global shutter for some time now with its Motion Mount, though.

Haha

Red essentially made a camera that is a small boxy camcorderish shape, with the screen on top and rear mounted NP like batteries (but possibly those F3 12V batts that look similar or redvolts, i haven’t been following too carefully). So when it is tucked against the chest or belly the operator bows their head and looks down like medium format. The global shutter is built into this camera.

Supposedly mid to late 2020 for under $7K.

We’ll see what happens when it is closer to release. It is still not finalized yet. But it exists and is being tested.

EDIT: oh yeah, and C Fast media!

Phil Holland posted a good summary of information that's been released so far:

"Komodo Specs (as of 11/16/2019):
- What's Komodo? A RED Compact Utility Camera in a small Cube-Cam form factor ready to pickup and shoot. Just add batteries, lens, media, and likely a display.
- Sensor Technology = New 6K Sensor that features Global Shutter and Rolling Shutter Modes as well as Phase Detect Auto Focus
- Max FPS = 6K FF @ 40fps, 6K WS @50fps. We can guestimate at 5K and 4K fps, but fps might change as they refine things ever so so slightly
- Anamorphic Support = Appears so
- Codec Support = Internal Compressed RAW = REDCODE RAW, unknown if other codecs are supported as of now
- Lens Mount = Integrated Canon RF Mount (easy to adapt to nearly anything)
- Media Type = CFast 2.0 (body features a media slot compartment w/ door)
- Power Options = Dual Slot Canon BP Style Batteries (various capacities) w/ hot swap and ability to run off one battery + DC IN (LEMO) - Lower Power Draw than DSMC2 for sure
- Camera Control = Integrated Touch Screen, On Camera Buttons, Some sort of Smartphone Interface, WiFi Control, EXT Port
- Monitoring = Top Side Pogo Cableless Display Tech, 4K 6G or 12G SDI Out
- Audio = Mic In 3.5mm jack, Headphone Jack, Internal Scratch Mic
- Camera Cooling = It appears there's an internal heat sink and fan w/ vent
- Form Factor = < 4x4x4" and built like a tank IMO
- Body Weight = < 2lbs
- Body Contruction = Appears to be Magnesium/Aluminum Alloy
- Buttons/Indicators = On/Off Switch, Power/Status Indicator, Record Button, Tally Light, Menu, Menu Selection Up/Down, Funtion Set, Playback (probably toggle), 2X Eject Buttons for Batteries, Media Compartment Open
- Wireless Camera Inteface/Control = WiFi w/ Antenna
- Mobile Phone Support = Android and IOS
- Rigging = 1/4"-20 around Pogo, 4X M4 around front of camera, 1X M3 for focus hook, general base plate form factor of DSMC2-style bodies
- Price Point = sub $5,000 USD for Hydrogen One Owners, normal MSRP is a mystery for now
- Camera Release Date = 2020, likely on the earlier side of things
* Might be available in multiple colors based on Jarred's rather favorable response to your Photoshop'n, no Michael Bay FU Nike Green for you however"

And here's a few of the teaser photos that have been released:

I think it looks great. Looks like a winner to me.
And I don't say that kind of thing often concerning RED.
Never been a fan of the marketing and the attitude.
Skin tones and noise can also be problematic in mixed light sources.
But the most recent generation is darned good and the trickle down here is excellent.
Global shutter at an affordable price is also much needed.
The camera also looks well built.
So if it is 7K without a lot of proprietary add-ons, I suspect there will be a lot sold.
The one traditional weakness of Red (and here is no exception) is the audio.
3.5mm jack, vs true XLR support, not so good...

I asked the same question on the reduser thread, but the question is with these amazing specs, will the average person have a reason to buy the main RED line? The Dragon X, which is the next camera in the line is $15k for the brain and requires thousands more in proprietary accessories to be functional. The Komodo uses cheap Canon batts and off the shelf CFast cards, so while it will need more rigging it will be infinitely less expensive to rig.

RED has just said that the Dragon X will get an upgrade to 6k, so at least Komodo does not have a resolution advantage over the more expensive option.

For the average shooter or indie filmer, unlikely. But in the pro world, there are plenty of arguments for the higher end cameras.

Although Steven Soderbergh might like filming on iPhones and Komodos, most of us would only want them to be a special use camera to compliment our main body.

Or to own a RED Komodo, and rent a full body camera for bigger jobs.

The Komodo is looking great.

To me, it is like Leica R glass. They are good. And you can cinemod them, but there is a reason why people go for ultraprimes or summicon c. They are just more production ready when working with a team.

The main problem for Red in general is Alexa LF/Mini LF eating into its previously guaranteed slice of the high end pro market, i.e., Netflix. And, on the low end pro, FX-9 and C500 MKII will dominate. Komodo seems to go for the same market as FX-9, fp and Pocket6K, which is a crowded territory.

Overall, there seem to be more competitors in the pro end with falling prices and exploding margins. The Big 4/5/6 are reporting terrible financials but the independents will be the first to fall.

Also, this is quite interesting. I’d imagine many people developed their shooting style with dragon sensors. Cool to see them get that option. That also opens up anamorphic lenses to Dragon users, no? Better frame rates. Seems a good deal if you already are accustomed to the look, no need to learn how a new sensor might behave.

What financials are you refering to?

I’ve only seen the consumer and prosumer sales referenced here on dvx.

@lochnessdigital

Thanks for posting those pictures and summary! Very helpful!

Looks like Variable ND is also built in. Must assume the motion mount is built in then. Being integrated might mean better performance than before?

Yes, I think the variable ND and global shutter are related in this way. The real issue is how much dynamic range is reduced by global shutter mode. Could be quite significant.

As far as I know it does not have a variable nd, but there is an EF adapter that has one built in. A lot of pages on that thread, so I could be mistaken.

Dragon used to be 6k with the Epic Dragon and was downgraded to 5k with the Scarlet W/Dragon X (but upgraded isle other significant ways). What they’re doing is unlocking the 6k on the Dragon X and keeping the same upgrade price for Scarlet owners.

It’s great for me because the jump from Scarlet W to Dragon X wasn’t large enough to for me to justify the price of the upgrade, but gaining 6k along with the other benefits is worth it IMO.

Yeah, that is a pretty sweet turn of events.
