RED in Space

Red cameras are great. They were such a small new company yet they managed to participate hugely in the transition of 35mm film to digital, as they were making great s35 sensor cameras that shoot at 24p and at a resolution similar or higher than film (4k). I admire the company.

Canon is an older wiser manufacturer, they make reliable solid cameras that work brilliantly and produce amazing images, I prefer them to the reds. But it's a personal preference. They're are all great cameras. Stop that childish war.

If a company gets their cameras up in space shooting, they would be stupid not to market it. It's simple marketing and both Canon and Red clearly know how to do it. If you wanted either companies not to market that event, Email the company about your reasons, they'll read it and if your logic is sound they might remove the article or stop doing the same in the future. I doubt you have any logic in such request though. Good luck!

And all of this Red or Canon in space means exactly what to those of us here on earth? Nothing! Kind of a mutual branding experience...NASA brands Red and Red brands NASA. Almost brings a tear to my eye......

Being the first camera on the moon did wonders for Hasselblad, although that might be a bunch of marketing hype too! I'm mean film surviving the Van Allen belt radiation, and more than 200 degrees on the surface of the moon. You know what happens to film when it goes through the X-ray machine at airports. There is a long history of camera hype and the space race.

I've never quite understood people's negative obsession with Red's supposed 'marketing'... especially since Red don't actually do much marketing at all, and never really have - The 'marketing' people get so annoyed about is primarily just the very vocal user/fanbase who are excited about their cameras.

And that's not the same thing.

And where do the fanboys get their talking points? Straight from the mouths of Red at Reduser.

Make no mistake about the source of the rhetoric that rubs so many the wrong way.

Red does tons of marketing, give me a break - both traditional (like the ad on the back of the ICG magazine on my coffeetable, or this press release) and non-traditional (Reduser and elsewhere on the net).

You seem like you need a hug.

Nope :) I'm actually very happy, because I haven't been forced to shoot with a Red in over a year!

I'm very confident in saying the "Red Era" is over in Hollywood - their only trump card (higher than 2k res) is now offered by many other manufacturers, and the only productions I've seen shooting on them lately are those that own them or got a great deal on them (they aren't renting out at full rate nearly as much as they used to).

I see a completely different market then you, but to each their own.

Not surprising for an owner-operator to say that.

It's hilarious when a somebody is bragging about a serial number in their sig - way to telegraph your bias!
It's hilarious when somebody hides behind a computer and username and tries to act like they know what their talking about. Seriously you need a hug, a Hand on your shoulder telling you it's gonna be ok.... You don't have to live in your mothers basement yelling on the Internet all your life, talking about making movies, more then actually making movies.

You are wasting your breath, I've been making movies professionally longer than you have. Of course you don't believe me, but I don't care :)

On a much more interesting and relevant topic than questioning each other's expertise and experience. Was all that RED equipment on the last cargo rocket that blew up yesterday?

It's an amazing feat for a private company who's goal was to go up against the corporation giants who never really provided filmmakers with the kind of cameras and features they wanted. It's only been 8 years but people ought not to forget the original roots of RED.
