RED Hydrogen - Holographic Phone

Wow, I can't believe how much RED hate there is around here. Personally speaking, redcode has changed our entire workflow, and capturing in such high resolution provides far more flexibility in post over 4K, not to mention the added resolvable detail achieved for UHD productions.

I remember getting advice from Barry way back when I was shooting on a DVX100, GH2, etc, and since then, we've expanded to a production office in CA with several new editors and producers - our latest docu-film hitting #1 in America last month and won 6 Hollywood film awards. There's a point where you realize that the tools you will end up needing as you grow are just not in a lot of cameras, and that can become limiting. What RED has done is provide a "Arri-like" camera at half the price.

Regardless of how you feel about RED's attitude, they are primarily a cinema company, and their so called "phone" will have features that a lot of REDusers know will be there. Software like Foolcontrol, timecode possibilities etc. Hydrogen will be a cinema tool, and most of us could care less about the "cell phone" functions which is why I personally reserved one minutes after orders opened.

I think it's the attitude towards RED on these forums that's juvenile...given who's forum this is to begin with...
Like they say:
"keep your friends close, your enemies even closer" or something like that. Jarred knows- this way it won't get out of hand hehehe...

Then one needs to ask, is it a phone or is it a production tool used to do many things with the RED ecosystem of cameras? I think the big reason for the less than positive comments is the phone part. if it was sold as simply a remote menu and control system for the cameras, it might go over a little better. The only reason I can think of wanting it to be a phone is to use as a low speed data link for things like updates. I seriously doubt it will replace a Google Pixel, Samsung XYZ, or iPhone. Maybe they will have a lens assembly that you can connect that can be used for scouting and pre-vis, which would indeed be pretty damn handy assuming you could enter your camera model and it would allow you to select known lens focal lengths. Wouldn't even need to be HD to work well as a pre-vis tool with this type of addition.

Your guess is as good as anyones. They really keep you guessing as to what it will become looking at the patent filing. Just how much of this do you get with your purchase? For under $1500, Figure 11 may be a decent deal.

"hate" would seem to me to be a melodramatic characterization.

From a casual read through of the patent, figure 11 is "prior technology" (I.E. current RED modular IP) figure 14 is the extension of that modular IP to new form factors.

Oh so that's showing the phone with a stack of modules on the left, based on prior art Red component architecture on the right?

Hmm, I'm not reading that in the Google version of the patent. It must be missing something. It reads "FIGS. 10A-B, 11 and 12 are perspective views of additional embodiments of camera system configurations in accordance with embodiments described herein.". It's not written like most patents where the descriptions of the embodiments go along with figure references, so that makes it hard to follow. But then, figure 11 does not have anything that looks like figure 14 in it, so it does look like a completely different system.

Ahh, nuts. I was interested in it with figure 11 @$1500. I would have been the bomb with my peeps carrying around a phone like that.

If the specs are there and the video quality does end up being pretty good and/or better than other smaller systems (mirrorless', DSLRs, lower-end cinema cameras), it's an exciting piece of hardware. A super portable brain-like system with a bunch of neat modules (sensors, lens adapters, lenses, high-speed options, 5-axis stabilization devices...the possibilities are endless).

I've always pictured these kind of devices getting built up like mini-transformers in the future. Pieces clicking, locking, twisting and turning to create all kinds of super cameras. Kind of like that Craft camera prototype video, but more high-tech.

Getting ahead of myself, ha...either way, RED really really needs a pocket cinema camera.
