RED Hydrogen - Holographic Phone

Didn't Amazon have 3d screen phone a while back?
It failed miserably. 3D content chain failed again few years ago- didn't you hear?:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) ;-)
BTW I wish Jim all the best in his new venture but I am sceptical as to the response....

Sounds like augmented reality.... sony been doing it for a couple of gens... apple doing it next gen and then what.... would have been cool if the phone worked r2d2 style. But Im not fanboi enough to fall on ly ass over this.

So is this just a lenticular screen (because I hate those, they drive my eyes nuts) or is this something different?
I'm not sure why I'm asking, you all probably have as much info as I do.

I know people joke about the red "cult" ha ha, but I just took a peek at reduser and it's pretty creepy over there! People are literally guessing at what the product could possibly do, and saying how excited they are about their own guesses. Huh? Not only is there no demo, there isn't even an actual photo! Just a super cool graphic that a marketing department created. It would be one thing if they had some kind of demo but were light on details, or if they had a lot of details but no demo, but NEITHER?!

Some guy even said, "Once again, a product I didn't even know I wanted, RED has convinced me I need!" I think I learned my freshman year of college that that is what marketing boils down to. Yikes!

Smith's Second Law of Technology Acquisition:

"Any piece of high tech equipment which you covet but cannot afford will be available, for free, in a dumpster somewhere within 20 years."

(And a lot sooner than that, for some things ...)

And will be sold at Sotheby's for a huge amount of money in forty.

Which is I am holding onto my VCR's and Jane Fonda workout videos.

I'm most excited to see what juvenile 'appeals to a 10 years old sensibilities' name it'll get.

I've never been a fan of RED since I shot with the MX-One back in the day. I think the latest cameras are wonderful but their marketing, image, names, attitude all strike me as juvenile and puerile. Also, REDs sometime can look sterile to me although I have seen some RED stuff that wasn't that way. Guess it depends on the DP and colorist? As far as what a holographic phone is, I have zero interest.

Jim is a great marketer and very market perceptive businessman. He knows our society is mostly "10 year old sensibility" responsive. He's made billions off that discovery ....

Perfect. Now the people who run around waving a camera around with no crew, no lighting or light modifiers and call themselves Directors of Photography can shoot on these and say "it was shot on RED".

(But the part about it functioning as a monitor and controller for the big RED cameras could be a cool thing)

Given that the typical phone vendor sells over 300,000 phones per day (Samsung sells 800K/day), you've got to wonder what will happen to a phone that sells a total of what, a few thousands?

lol I could see the studio brass watching the feed... calling up in the middle of a take and saying. "Take #35 is no better than take #25."

I honestly don't know what this new thing actually does, but as far as innovation...they put 4K in people's hands when 99% of the rest of the world was still shooting SD.

Where else can I buy an 8K camera right now? (Does anyone else sell one? Serious question.)

The most brilliant minds in history have failed and failed again...maybe RED will too but you can't blame them for trying something different. These people have access to information and live lives many of us will never experience.

Maybe the world wasn't ready for this device a few years ago, but now is...
