Red Gun No more?

As far as I can tell there hasn't been any discussion as to whether it has officially been ditched, but what I was wondering was whether there is any kind of handheld addon being developed other than the handle that attaches to the top of the camera. I know the gun was a little unconventional for most traditional users but I actually quite like the idea myself. Any idea about this?

Good question. Looks like we get a shoulder mount. It may be left up third party for some kind of handheld, other than the handle on top. Would be nice to know if RED has something in the works.

It is kinda like a rifle arm that attaches to the base of the camera and lets you hold it in an old cinecamesque fashion. It looked great for simple handheld shooting, if a little unconventional for some peoples use.

Great to hear its going to be around in some form... cheers Jim

I'm still fascinated by that idea. Heck, I'm still fascinated by all of the RED accessories and I can't wait for a full price list! :)

may i suggest that since its being redesigned, reducing the weapon like aesthetic and configuration of it would be a good idea... This may sound like a joke, but I am seriously concerned about certain hotheaded law enforcement officers that would shoot down someone wielding a handheld rocketlauncher in the middle of a crowd.

But then again you have to think of it from an ergonomics point of view. Guns have been made for a very long time, they have refined the shape and form to be comfortable and accurate, immitating one wouldn't actually be that stupid in many respects, when you put accessories onto the camera such as lense viewfinder etc it will look nothing like a weapon even to a layman. Besides, you would often be accompanied by others especially if you were on a film shoot or if you are just out and about filming you would likely have a sound assistant there if nothing else. But even if you were one person walking down the street on your own with 20k of gear on your arm, I wouldn't be worried about the police approaching me thinking it was a weapon, I'd be worried about muggers approaching me to steal the thing.

While the ergonomics of a rifle allow expert (and very practiced) shooters to hold to less than a minute of arc (without a rest I'm more a 2 1/2 MOA guy) that is with a rifle that may weigh ten pounds all up... and even then it is held for less than a minute for 99% of shots taken off the benchrest. I think that it would work well for short takes but when they run over a minute or so I'd want the weight on my shoulder, not balanced 15 inches out in front of me.

But this comment is based on what the old design showed and will probably be rendered moot in December.

Ditto. I do a lot of non-permit shooting in public places. I'd hate to have an accident with the trigger happy Los Angeles police.

Heck, I was working on a video game where 2 Artists of middle eastern decent were out taking reference photos of bridges right after 9/11. They were detained 36 hours before we could prove they were art dorks.

If they were using that big metal Red Prototype, I'm not sure they would have survived.
