RED: focus assist?

I never thought of a focus assist untill Evinsky said smething about it on another thread.

That got me thinking. Some MF still cameras have a little green light in the viewfinder when the subject is in focus. I was always thinking of just focusing by using the digital zoom, like on panasonic Lumix digital cameras.
On the more expensive Lumix cameras, you manual focus with a thumnail image in the center of the screen that is zoomed in, while you frame the subject withthe image outside the thumb nail. I assume RED will have something similar.

But since Evinsky brought it up, it would be great if RED had a thru the lens focus assist. A simple green LED light to tell you when the center spot of the image is in focus would be great.

Some people thought of the wild idea of using a laser range finder, when entering the RED contest. I snickered at first but I Googled "laser rangefinder" and saw some cool webpages.

I am no laser expert, but you guys who were interested in laser rangefinders should read the whole article on the website I listed above. I might be usable for a focus assist. There is probably a algorithm that cheap digital cameras use to determine if something is in focus by analysing pixels. That is probably the way to go, gut lasers sound high tech and cool.

The link above is good, You should read it. And for those who were interested in shift lenses, there is a link at the bottom of that web page.
If you look at the test images, you will see that manual focus assist on digital cameras are not that great. Focusing AF is not great either. Using a LCD screen is not great. It seems shooting at f8 is the only way to ensure a good shot where things are in focus. It is a good link, make sure to click on it.

IF you're happy with a green light, then I think what we have in camera as a focus assist will not just blow your socks off, but the rest of your clothes too. You'll have to wait and see, but I think you'll be rather impressed.
