Red Drive

80 GB of Red drive @ under $1,000--- not bad. What do others think of the Red drive's price?

Does anyone know of other sizes as well?

Also, congratulations to everyone involved with this project, as well as Jim-- truly remarkable, and good luck with today!

Yeah I just saw that too (on FAQ's). So an entry level Red One would be:

$17500 - Body
$1000 - Red Drive
$5000 - Red Lense (only 300mm at this price atm)
Total - $23500

Still pretty good given what you could film with that.

Or even less money outlay to put it in action if you use a 35mm photo lens...but it will be impossible to film anything, no matter how you set it up.

Perhaps record is a better word.

Ah, semantics and anachronisms...

Yeah 80gb for $1000 isnt bad at all.

When you see 80gb Drive.. dont assume its a spinning drive :)

Are you serious?? Its flash?

A laptop drive by itself cant record 30Mb/s.. so its gotta be either flash or some other red magic.

A single laptop drive can come pretty close. Two laptop drives in a RAID configuration should be able to handle it with bandwidth to spare, and still fit into a fairly compact package.

Yeah...I kinda thought RedDrive and RedRaid were one in the same, no? Anyway...I have a feeling the RedFlash is gonna be the way to go when the dust settles. Just seems if we're doing away with tapes, why don't we go the whole nine yards and get rid of all the moving parts.
Peace,

-Harry

I'm all for getting rid of moving parts, but it's worth remembering that flash memory costs upwards of 10 times as much per gigabyte, when compared with laptop hard drive storage.

RED Drive and RED Raid are different recording options. From the beginning there have been four RED recording options proposed:

RED Drive (internal, 2k on down)

RED Flash (internal, 2k on down)

RED Raid (external, 4k on down)

RED Ram (external, 4k on down)

No Red Flash I think is gonna be the super hero of it all.. cause it lets you record on camera.

Red Drive.. will just give you near camera extended recording.. and if it is a laptop raid array of drives, that gives you some serious volume.

Well, it would be awesome if an off-the shelf drive could be used especially when hitachi is coming out with 1 Terrabyte drives near the end of the year.

You forgot RED Rum Gibby hah hah hah hah :)

If the RED Drive is no longer internal, then RED Flash will definately be the best choice for any highly mobile recording - hand held, ENG-style, Steadycam, jib, etc. If the RED Drive is external, but mounts well on the RED Rail system, it could still be used well for mobile applications.

it appears that the red drive mounts on the rail in that littel cage on the back.. unless something else goes there.

I always thought it was 'built in' inside of the camera, somewhere in the central portion of the camera. I always thought that was one of Red's trademarks, or at least central points. Maybe that is.....

A Red Drive as flash outside, though, produces some rather viable opportunities, similar to what P2 is offering now, with the capability for the user to have how ever many storage elements ready and swappable, for whatever purpose. Plus the picture looks cool.......

Yes.. there is a drive slot on the camera for a RED FLASH drive.. similar to P2 IN camera. outside the camera is the RED DRIVE, which could be anything, but is still portable enough to attatch to the cage or rail.
