Red announces Scarlet to ship in 2011

My thoughts too. It's a little distasteful that they would rain on Canon's parade. But business is war I guess.
I'm interested to see what both come up with - on the same day. Who knows it could be Scarlet vs. a new inkjet printer or a hair dryer or...

This (the announcement date) is plain cringe worthy.

RED should be celebrating the fact they they have just launched a fantastic camera (Epic) yet they are more concerned with trying to rain on the competition's parade. (even though Canon have never and might never compete on the same target market)

Last time Canon encroached on their patch with the 5DII (even though the cameras were in completely separate price brackets).... they scraped their plans and "invented" the DMSC, 3 years later we are just starting to see the results.

I guess they really get concerned about Canon.... very strange really.

btw - I'm sure the people at RED have some idea of what Canon will be announcing... i'm certain this is all about 1 up manship, purely so they can snigger at Canon when they announce a camera that doesn't match RED (even if the prices and launch dates are completely different).

Business is not a school game, it is everyman for himself, take no prisoners, storm the castle and burn it down if possible. The other manufacturer, is not your friend in anyway, he is doing his very best to destroy you and you him. Not because he may or may not have any love for you but because in your death his business becomes stronger. This is the way the game has been played since wheat was traded for beads. Don't hold any ill will toward RED for doing what most successful business have done for centuries and centuries.

Don't believe the hype.

Canon and RED share one thing in common. They have both kept us waiting a long time.

Frankly, it's hard for me to have faith in either of them.

Let's see something concrete now.

1) RED (Jim) told us that RED would be done with detailed early-on announcements of cameras and release dates. And that they would be done with detailed interim updates. But that we would still get updates to let us know where things are headed in the market so that people could make informed purchasing decisions. There have been a lot of people on REDUSER asking about Scarlet because they are going to be needing a camera soon - either an AF-100, an F3, or a Scarlet.

2) RED (Jim) isn't announcing an announcement. He's announcing a ship date, accompanied by an announcement of the final specs and price. "When we announce the changes, we will be ready to ship." Don't read this as "More Scarlet News on Nov 3rd." Read this as "Scarlet begins shipping Nov 4th, update on final specs and pricing Nov. 3rd."

3) Intentionally going head to head with Canon? Sure, why not. Scarlet was going to be announced about then anyway, apparently (since they will be ready to ship). RED has long been a champion of the idea that the "big guys" have been making virtually everyone overpay for crippled cameras. I'm sure Jim thinks this will be another excellent chance to exhibit some of the core concepts behind RED.

4) This won't be the same Scarlet we've all seen before. It has changed.

5) RED's internal policy has been changing regarding shipping. And lately, they've been delivering. Literally. They developed EPIC-M to get around some of their manufacturing problems as a result of the tsunami.

On July 18th they announced that Epic-Ms would be "In Stock". They have been.

They then announced that Epic-X was going live on August first. They started shipping the next day.

My concern is, in a rush to compete with whatever Canon offer... they will announce and ship the Scarlet, but leave everyone hanging on accessories.

I hope I am wrong, I don't want them to fail and probably will buy a Scarlet, once the dust settles. I don't really like their marketing, but that wont stop me buying a camera, if it is the right fit for me.

accessories.

Regardless of any perceived rush to compete, this has always been a quiet concern of mine regarding Scarlet. I have no idea about how their supply chain works, but I just hope that 1) Scarlet turns out to be absolutely fantastic and 2) they are able to easily cope with the droves of people who want such a fantastic camera in terms of accessory (monitoring, power, media, rig) sales.

I feel like they could probably outsell their RED ONE numbers in a couple of months with Scarlet, if it is what I think it is.

... DSLR crowd seem to really not care about crap compression and horrible codecs... they just love that shallow depth of field.

I want to see canon release a DSLR with HD-SDI out, line level audio in with a moire/alias solution.

... and I'll get the scarlet as well :)

They might, just might, have a better idea... otherwise they're also hanging around on the forums and speculating too much.

Exactly! I've always said that. Especially since Jim seems to be announcing it in the singular "Scarlet". I so hope it doesn't have a fixed lens, but I fear my hopes are taking a wrong direction.

"Jannard - Like the scorpion... it is our nature."

He might want to rethink the metaphors:

The story goes that the river was flooding and the scorpion said to the frog, “please help me and carry me on your back to the other side,” The frog said, “you will sting me and kill me if I do.” The scorpion scoffed and said that it wouldn’t be in his best interest as they would both die and drown.

So the frog agreed and the scorpion jumped on his back and he swam across to the shore. As they reached safety the scorpion stung the frog. As he was dying the frog lamented, “why did you do that?’ The scorpion responded arrogantly, “It’s in my nature.”

Actually, the scorpion stings the frog midway across, killing them both. Not at the end. At least in the original version of the story.

"The fable is used to illustrate the position that the behaviour of some creatures is irrepressible, no matter how they are treated and no matter what the consequences." It's not that the scorpion is a cruel, selfish, and arrogant creature, as you suggest. It's that the scorpion just can't resist doing what is natural for it, even if the end result is it's own conscious death.

I think the idea is that even though their "open discourse policy" doesn't work out so well for them sometimes (missed dates, significant product redesigns, some consumer confusion) it is just the way they do things. As the scorpion suffers death for his nature, so RED suffers a bit for it's nature. But Jim obviously feels (as do many at REDUSER) that they would rather have a more open discourse and some confusion and missed dates, than to be largely in the dark except for a few rumors.

"Everything is subject to change"

People should only get excited when they're able to click "Buy" on the RED store. Until then...

What if the November 3rd announcements are the same announcement? What if it's a Canon Scarlet? Eh? EH?!

(BRB, purchasing canonscarletuser.com to sell later).

They'd been getting a lot of flack from REDusers surrounding the Scarlet and lack of information. I think they felt it was a good idea to release something to calm the waters.

Well I posted on the red forum that it's likely (if Canon really does have something) that both companies do well. The price of the Scarlet is likely IMO to be a little higher than most can afford, and some aren't ready for 3k in their computer systems with RAW, but that's my opinion. Many will jump at the Scarlet and it will be something that's never been available for the price I'm sure, sorta how the DVX was when it came out. BUT, Canon if they have something good, will snatch up whoever can't get the Scarlet...if they're smart about what they decided to make that is. I'm totally for some sort of AF100ish camera from Canon with 1080p or 2k resolution from a big chip properly downrezzed...that would be amazing.

Regardless of who wins...RED or Canon, we all win. It's a great time to be a filmmaker.
