RED 2.35 anamorphic?

yes as Stuart suggests, recording in camera via a crop to 2.35 is definately the easiest way to go.

yeah but Mathieu Kassovitz has solid ideas how the best way to go..

Robert Sanders is there too.. other filmmaker.. (digital filmmaker: F900 XL-H1 etc)

isn't RED the filmmaker's digital camera?

edit

doesn't Jim Jannard say that he is all ears.. specially when there is the filmmakers' point?

Your right, i just said Easiest, not necessarily the best.

They are listening and you can see Stuart (who is one of the Red Team) is there participating.. they are taking feedback from you guys every single day.

What would be really nifty would be fully user selectable aspect ratio viewfinder and LCD monitors (as well as the usual presets - obviously only one would be a native aspect ratio, and the one to use for critical focus, and others would be scaled) as options. With a camera this flexible and adaptable, I can see some people putting weird and wonderful and unforeseen lens arrangements on it.

Sorry, I'm being lazy and haven't done a search on the Red's proposed viewfinder/monitor options, so apologize if this has been covered already.

yes.. we all would love both selectable guide lines and selectable aspect ratios.

They could actually come up with a 2:35 format and codec, using a masked 4K capture. They capture only the part of the sensor in the middle, thus saving quite a few pixels in the compression. Using REDCODE, maybe they could stream the 2K-ish 2:35 image more easily... We could edit it easy and just export to letterbox 4K in the end...

...a "windowed-4K" mode for 2:35? Not a bad idea. Not bad at all. :)

I like it Hans, I like it.

I love 2:35.. just makes sense to record it down without bars or needing to crop from a 16:9.

Gotta love the tapeless workflow.. it gives you options.

Yes it´s a great idea. :)
No superfluous data to record and no hassle with croping as You said. :)

I really hope Mr Jannard & Co reads this! :)

"Gotta love the tapeless workflow.. it gives you options."
I could not agree more. :)

I asked this very question a long time ago (including the data-payload savings), and got zero replies:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=54881

I calculated a 26-percent savings in data with in-camera cropping, although that doesn't take into account possible run-length encoding done by the codec that might make the cropped-out black regions a non-issue. Thousands of black (or any solid-color) pixels can be expressed by a few bytes.

Sorry we missed that stokestack :)

And yes, if its a macroblock algo, the black bars can be compressed to nothing in a variable bit rate. For a fixed frame fixed rate compression algo though each frame has to take up a certain amount of bits, so no real saving, however the image within each frame can be copressed better (depending on if the compression is done before or after the bars are added)

we all kinda agree that just chopping off the bars is a better way to go, since no tape does not lock us to any standards.

is that THE matthieu kassovitz?

if so, what the hell is he doing on a message board like dv info? no disrespect to the indie community, because i'm part of it, just surprised to see one of the brightest talents in french cinema on a board for video shooters.

if it is him, can someone post over there and ask him when the hell LA HAINE and ASSASINS are coming out on dvd over here?

i tried to post over there, but they're not letting me for some reason. i just registered so maybe my accounts not activated yet.

hurd's place is strange.. i don't like either.. i mean him.. i prefer the smart Jarred.. (with capital letter) ..there seems to me like USSR but who cares? but he has an informative website, this is true.. besides, he's a master to promote himself..

i didn't understand if you were a dv info user or not yet.. anyway if you already know him you know he is editing when he doesn't like the way as you posted.. even when you don't attack anybody..

worst, he is a specialist in editing.. deleting what he can or wants :badputer:

just to give the idea that he is very important if necessary.. and if you don't like it, he invites you to move to here to the anonymous forum without famous people unless us.. to other's home and saying there's a place for people like you.. i'm sorry chris (we know that you read these boards though silent  here you cannot edit our posts)
but they are your own words :violent5:and it would be difficult to keep private.. :crybaby:

here is not the same.. Jarred is fair.. i prefer his unpretentious method.. he knows what it is this medium.. the net.. and he has the audience and success as such he has..

and i already had posts deleted here also for some reason (but NEVER edited), nevertheless, i can assure that..
