C100: Recording Ninja v Prores 422 question

On a shoot recently, second time using the Ninja. Didn't realize the HDMI-out camera info settings were set up to automatically burn into the footage. WTF?

Shoot was for broadcast, as per broadcast specs was required to be 50mbps 422. Can I get the same (or similar) result by transcoding to Prores 422 after the fact?

Not concerned about the negligible difference in visual quality, more just keeping the relationship with the client smooth by delivering as per the required specs.

Thanks!

Technically even if you transcode to ProRes you can see it is AVCHD in the vectorscope. You cannot actually get the same result. But it will be similar. On a practical basis mostly no one will ever know.

And yeah, it burned in the info, external recorders always do that kind of thing if you don't change output settings. You probably should have tested the unit more before using it. Not to be critical, but if it's an important client it's always that much more important to test.

I recently converted C100 AVCHD to ProRes HQ to a broadcaster and it went to air without an issue. My HDMI cable was playing up, so I had to ditch the Ninja for the shoot.

Totally. Was a mistake. First time I used it was on another C100 and they must've had that setting turned off already.

Oops.

Convert the AVCHD to ProRes using 5DtoRGB. It's slow, and not ideal, but it does some cool voodoo to interpolate the 4:2:0 footage to pseudo 4:2:2. It definitely makes a difference. I believe there is still a free Lite version available: http://rarevision.com/5dtorgb/

I agree with Nate. If you do the transcode with say ClipWrap it is quicker, but strong reds will have a "interlaced" appearance with jagged edges. If you use 5DtoRGB that all goes away and is much smoother.
