Hi,
to record ambient, environment from the dslr.
theres 3 scenarios:

1) use rodevideomic pro in the canon 5d mark ii

2) use a pcm-m10 audiorecorder on top of the canon 5d (the pcm-m10 is connected via 1/8'' jack)

3) use the built-in mic of the canon 5d.

I guess the 2nd option would be better for environment sound, 1st would be better if someone is talking in front of the cam.

Thanks in advance

How about option #4?

Cheap, no battery required, and better than the camera's mics.

Ack. You're still using the camera's preamps and circuitry. With a $90 mic, which gives me pause. None of these 4 scenarios are that hot, but there are far more than three.

Get something like a Tascam DR-60D and the best stereo condenser you can afford (if you even need stereo - but I think most environmental stuff is captured mono and then a stereo mix is done).

There's a huge selection of very good condenser mics out there if you don't need a hyper. Lots of chinese cardioid pencil condensers that would be fine for ambient sounds. The ADK SD models are cheap and pretty glorious, the Joe Meeks reviewed well, the Avantones, and then up to the Oktavia with a hyper which is a legit on-set mic.
