I'd really appreciate any input on this...
I was shooting snowmobile races today in extremely cold weather (-10F). The camera worked fine for a while, but then I got the "Auto Off Cylinder Lock" warning. After power cycling several times, the warning went away and I continued shooting for another hour or so (during this time I recorded maybe 15 minutes of footage, w/several starts and stops, and the power on the whole time) before taking a short break, during which I turned the camera off to save battery power. When I powered back on, I got the "cylinder lock" warning again. I power cycled several times again, and the warning disappeared just in time for me to catch the final race of the day. So all was fine...
Turns out about 10-15 minutes of footage is missing-- the stuff directly leading up to that last race (which is there in full) and directly between the two "cylinder lock" warnings. It occurs to me now that my camera was making some loud noises when i was power cycling, especially the second time around. I assumed that due to the cold weather and the cylinder lock issue, that it was working extra hard to power up and down. Now I'm wondering if it's possible that one of the noises i heard was the heads actually winding the tape back in reverse (and if so...why???).
Also, I'm not sure if this matters, but I was recording in free run TC. During that 15 minutes of lost footage, the actual timecode jump is over an hour.
The "Cylinder Lock" thing is another issue I'll have to look at, but right now I'm trying to figure out what could have happened to the missing footage.
