Record uncompressed 14-bit (4:4:4) on your HVX200

i dont know what kinetta smells like but....im wonderin why the main reel stream page has been taken out, as you know the page had the teaser for the HYDRA coming soon picture. i dont wanna sound negative either as i supported the
HYDRA from day one, but this would be a major bummer for a lot of HVX users.

I'll tell you what Kinetta is. Before that, I'll tell you about my favorite painting. It's the one called boulevard of broken dreams. You've seen it......It's the one with Elvis behind the counter, Marilyn and Bogie sitting beside each other, and James Dean off to the side. It's a portrait of fallen greatness, of so much promise and such wasted lives.

OK, I'll stop being philosophical. Kinetta was a 4K camera designed by a man of the same name. It was touted as the best, most promising, etc. etc. And it faded into vaporware just like 95% of the other promising products. It was created with the best of intentions, like most things in life and turned out to be a bust.

I sincerely hope Hydra doesn't go this way. I was really looking forward to it.

LOL Come on dudes. Reel Stream has delivered Andromeda. Let's have faith in what they're creating.

Maybe they have something even better in store? Or have added something tasty to the Hydra system that we didn't see coming?

You never know! Juan will pop in when he gets a chance, I'm sure, and update us all.

I'm definately looking forward to HYDRA- I hope that it comes out as well. While I love the RED, and I have liked working with it, the HYDRA would be a much more affordable option for me- especially if they make it so that it records to modular media- if you do not have ot be tethered to laptop, that would be killer!

hey kholi, i hope you're right man

and you gotta admit 2k, 4:4:4 at 11-13 possible stops, is kind of hard to forget:Drogar-Love(DBG):

Kinetta was a 4K camera designed by a man of the same name.

Kinetta was designed by Jeff Kreines.
It wound up never coming to market because he was waiting on the release of a specifc CMOS sensor from a third party manufacturer which never materialized.

As far as 'Hydra' goes - let's not jump the gun people.
Do any of you remember Juan's first posts over at DVinfo when he started the Andromeda project? Before it was called Andromeda... before it was even considered as a 'product'.... It took MUCH much longer to get that out than it's taken for Hydra so far.
He's already brought one really impressive project to market - I think it's entirely too early to start calling anything 'Vaporware.'

Hmmmm I'm not impressed. I really dig the image quality, but the workflow really just kills it for me. I'm extremely happy with the P2 format, so unless Realstream comes with with a non-buggy form of their software then maybe I'll look into it, but for now I'll stick with 4:2:2

but for now I'll stick with 4:2:2

To be fair - andromeda is about alot more than 4:4:4
Whether or not its 'worth it' is obviously a subjective choice...I'm just saying that the difference between DVCProHD compression and uncompressed is much more major than the difference between 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 (In my opinion anyhow).

You're totally right, I was more or less making a general statement where for now I'll stick with my HVX :)

Chris actually shot a music video that our studio is editing right now with the Andromeda, so I've seen it in action.

in fact here's a scaled screen from it:

Hey guys, long time no post, been flying around shooting :)

The music video footage is really cool (that grab is uncorrected by the way), but thats actually the last project I shot using the "best" LUT the system comes with. I now shoot everything using my own custom designed LUT, and use the magenta filtering trick as well, which make my footage even cleaner now.

I have to say, its nice having a full 9.5 stops.

As for Hydra having more than 10 stops, I'm a bit weary. It all depends on what the physical sensors can really do, AND the quality of the ADC as well. Lots of factors go into it, not just bit depth.

Are these hacked systems for everyone?

No.

I've come to that conclusion after months of use. Its right up my alley as a DP, but then again, I think most people on this board would argue that I'm a very different kind of digital DP anyways (the $750 spot meter swinging from my neck says it all).

I personally prefer Andromeda over HVX, but then again, I have very different values as a DP.

Just thought I'd throw in one more note.

When your dealing with compression based systems like the stock HVX, you have to keep in mind the cameras built in signal processing. After shooting linearly for quite sometime, I've come to view many cameras differently.

The HVX has a nice codec to work with, BUT, what good is that codec if the cameras built in signal processing feeds it noisy footage?

Just some food for thought.

As for HDV, the format blows as far as post work goes, but if the camera has really good internal signal processing....

Do you see where I'm going with this?

I've gotten "beyond" the formats, and I now look towards the cameras themselves. There is this linear curve right up front at the sensors, what portion of the curve the manufacturer gives you to work with is quite important, as well as what bit depth its captured at (and the sampling), and from there, how they process that portion of the cameras linear response comes into play (ie, do they process the signal while its still at 12 bit 4:4:4, or do they numb it down to 8 bit 4:2:2 and then process it), etc...

Andromeda certainly taught me a bunch....

I agree - a while back TimurCivan posted
"Andromeda exists, and he makes money on it. Why wouldnt Hydra come out?"
and one reason would be if for the DVX the camera front end was far superior to the recording medium, with the HVX, DVCproHD is far more of a match for it's front end.

Is there a link to the Hydra website, incidentally? The one I've been trying just seems to go straight to the forums.

I think your mis-interpreting what I said.

The DVCPRO HD codec isn't the issue, its the processing the signal goes threw prior to being encoded to DVCPRO HD, which is why I now look at HDV cameras in a new light. The end result of HDV is something thats not very editing friendly, but neither is DVD compression, yet I see lots of great looking DVDs out there. Lots of formats look great, but only if you feed the encoding for those formats something thats good looking in the first place....

Make sense?
