Record to HD without P2?

However, providing us with a relatively cheap HDD-based solution will probably hurt the P2 cards sales a bit.. So the dillema for Panasonic would be to either attract more potential Pany fans with this outstanding HD camera, or to make a higher costing solution leaving the consumer HD market for Sony and others.
I personally think Panasonic won its share among the prosumer cameras, and now it's time for the "DVX100 HD". *Prays for HVX200 to be hdd-based*

Yeah, but $10K for 8-10 mins of HD footage that can be recorded, or around 280 mins on an external HDD is quite different. Guess what the obvious choice currently is.

So, any confirmation yet?!

Why is this taking so long to answer, and why so prone to confusion?
All it takes is asking the reps "does it record direct to HDD via Firewire or USB 2.0?"

It's NAB.....
Come on!

Someone there has to have the answer.

or...maybe......

because it simply CAN'T record direct to HDD via Firewire!!

Maybe we all need to face reality for a bit.

I know this is a tough concept for people to grasp, but: THE CAMERA ISN'T DONE YET. It's not going to be on the shelves for six months, at least! There's plenty of time to work out some technical details and some implementations.

They are trying to implement it. If it can be done, they will. If it can't be done, they won't.

It's not done yet. There are answers that aren't available yet. There may be more surprises in store for us by the time it actually ships.

The NAB unveiling is a preview of what they're working on. It is not a final, end-all-and-be-all locked-down releasing of all possible specs. The product is still in development!

Thank You!

A solid answer!

We'll just have wait 6 months and see if the Gods of Panasonic
have answered our prayers.

Well, I hope Panasonic takes shooters like me into consideration as they attempt to work this out. P2 is useless for run & gun field producers. I shoot 3- 4 hours on the go as a 1 man band, just to get 4 finished minutes. P2 is useless for my workflow. If I can record to an external drive taht I can carry on a belt or, then it's the ultimate camera. If not, I have to go elsewhere for Hi Def, if and when my client wants it, which would sadden me no end, as I seriously love my 100A.

Personally this is frustrating in the short term, but in the long term I think it's a very smart move. It seems Panasonic are listening to customers when designing this camera, so why not announce it early, with some specs, and hear what people rant about for the next couple of months. Then give yourself another 4 months to tweak things that you can tweak.

But the suspense is killing me!

I could be wrong but did read somewhere on here that a card reader for 10 bucks would be able to read the p2 card. if i am correct i belive i saw it was a pcmia i was wondering if someone could give me some info on this card reader.

I don't think we should be concerned about the reader, really :). I doubt it's very costy to build one, especially when the P2 itself is just a RAID array of flash memory cards.
$10 - very doubtful too. Because the reader will have to be connected via FireWire 800, and that alone is more than 10 bucks. But not too expensive either. Something like $100 max, I think.

You can still fit only 2 mins of 1080 HD video on that, which I consider unacceptable.
You can't store any HD video on it. The 4-GB card is the lowest-capacity P2 that can handle DVCPro HD.

4GB minimum for HD - even worse.. Oh well, P2 isn't an affordable solution for a small budget. I might be willing to make a switch to HD, but it would mean saving on food and toilet paper. But if P2 is the only way to record HD, then .. I guess HVX200 isn't for me.
I truly hope that the guys from Panasonic are reading this and goin "Arghhh.. Another whiner! YES, YES! YOU WILL HAVE YOUR DAMN HDD-BASED RECORDING! Just quit crying that HVX200 is not for you!"

I just figure I will buy the 200 and shoot on tape until the p2 cards have more capacity. I know I wont get the full range of the cam but atleast I can upgrade my cam situation.[font=&quot]
