Record to HD without P2?

Can someone give us a definitive answer as to weather the camera is capable of recording directly to a FireWire or USB 2.0 Hard Drive "without going to P2 first"?

This seems like a simple function that would alleviate all my concerns about this camera. P2 is too expensive (for now) and I want to be able to record to a medium that is relatively cheap and plentiful.

yeah it looks like that. That would be awesome - but if P2 becomes cheaper - nothing to beat it.

not yet confirmed ? The brochure says so... at least I thought i saw it in the PDF - USB2.0 and firewire out, and also that Panasonic guys recorded footage to a iPod!

Noah did say that last night.. BUT.... Barry said he and Jarred didn't get a straight answer out of Panasonic on it...so it's possible it was a misunderstanding.

The camera will definitely transfer files from P2 cards to any external FIrewire or USB drive wihtout the need for a laptop or other computer... but it's still unconfirmed whether or not it will record directly to those drives.

Well, Noah confirmed it, but we're waiting for Panasonic to do the same. From Barry Green's comments, it sounds like they're still working on implementing this feature but it's not a slam dunk. To me this is a huge deal--the difference between having to buy P2 cards to record HD and just plugging in an off-the-shelf HDD for HD recording. My guess is it could be a difference of 25% or more in camera sales, but I'm sure Panny knows that and will implement it if at all possible.

BTW, Noah has some technical chops and I highly doubt he'd get such an important detail mixed up.

Sorry if I gave the wrong impression...i've been posting like mad, and am a bit sleep deprived. I mentioned in anotehr thread that NOah may have been mistaken...

I realize Noah has some MAJOR technical chops, and he can run circles around me.
I didn't mean to say that he misunderstood anything...only that it is possible that a miscommunication occurred. I know Noah knows his sh*t, but it's possible that if someone from Panasonic mispoke, the fact that the camera can 'transfer' the files, and the idea that it could 'record direclty' could be easily blurred together.

Hopefully Noah can chime in soon and clear up exactly who told him what, etc.

AHH this is exciting stuff, analyzing from what Barry Green said, and the posts said above, I believe Panasonic can impliment the direct-to-hd solution to the camera, but I also believe that as the proprieter of the P2 technology, they will try to come up with a compromise between the two sides.

Panasonic needs to protect thier best interests in terms of P2, but at the same time, the consumers want the luxary of direct-to-hd.

The past few years of course, Panasonic is basically giving the consumer everything they want for a reasonable price; I believe this issue will be resolved in the consumers' favor.

At least I hope! :)

Luis--I wasn't implying at all that you were questioning Noah's expertise. You're absolutely right about the miscommunications flying around right now. They're pretty thick on the board at the moment. I just wanted to clarify for anyone that doesn't know him--Noah probably isn't the weak link.

I think direct-to-hd will be essential for this camera's success, especially since JVC will be offering this option.

P2 sounds a little too much "razor and blades" business model. There's no need for proprietary memory storage, especially one so restricted in capacity. Even with both P2 slots maxed, the available 1080p recording time is laughable.

I'll reserve judgement until we know more, but feel pretty strongly that P2 alone isn't going to cut it.

There's nothing "razor and blades" about P2. I fully expect that most users will buy maybe two, maybe three P2 cards EVER. It's a totally different workflow. With tape it's razor & blades, but with P2, the cards are practically a part of the camera.

If it is part of the camera, then it should come with the camera.

For $6,000, I love it, but thinking of it being $10,000 for 2 p2 cards, makes me hold off on that option.

When all is said and done, I think the $6,000 option will be the one I take. I can wait and shoot 720p untill i need the p2 cards.

Cost is only one factor. I occasionally need to record longer programs. This was always a problem with the 20 min BetaSp load. Direct to disk would give me that option. Without it the camera has major limitations.

You still have the direct-to-HD option, and right off the shelf Maxtor offers 300GB FireWire HDD for around $250-300. 300 GB is about 300 minutes of HD 1080i/p video, which is more than enough for me.

Everyone is wishing for the direct to HDD option, but Panny hasn't confirmed it yet.

You guys are thinking about it the video way - hey a tape is 6 bucks and I get 60 minutes.

Film magazines and film can cost you over 1k. You only really keep 2 or 3 of these around. When the film is exposed, stop and change to another film reel.

Granted, it doesn't seem all that "digital". But anyone in the film world, if asked to carry around 2 or 3 p2 cards or 2 or 3 film magazines....well, no brainer there.

If you want to shoot a documentary, perhaps this isn't the cam to shoot it with. But I imagine by the time this cam rolls out, you'll have a hd option.

But of course, the Firestore solution will be around 1k....

Well, without it HVX200 won't quite hit the target market Panasonic is aiming for. To fully compete with FX1, Z1, and possibly the upcoming XL3, there should be a relatively cheap way to record video in 1080 or at least 720 resolutions. No direct-to-HDD option leaves us with (currently) expensive P2 and miniDV tape, and if we're to buy a few P2 cards, which you can still only record so much on, the cost dramatically increases. In this case Z1 sounds better to me.
But of course, HVX200 is still dirt cheap compared to the big bro Varicam.
