AC160 Recommended theatrical settings for 130/160

Just got my AC160 last Tuesday, and have another 4 shoots with it this week, all thearter work. My current settings are "ok", but tend to blow out highlights somewhat. I just used my HMC150's and the AC160 all on F1 last Friday and while their color match was ok under theater lighting, I was hoping to tame the highlights a bit. I thought that I would try them both on B-STR, and maybe use DRS-1.
I will be bringing my Marshall 7" monitor to help with focus as well although it ain't any 1080 x 1920. I was planning on running manual focus, and using push-auto to initially set focus and then switch to manual so it can't hunt.
Any suggestions that you may have on running these cams together in a small theater setting-what has worked for you-would sure be appreciated!
Thanks,
SW

qurious about this as well, I have another thread going where I asked if this is normal behaviour of the camera and if it can be contained. I have seen this type of blown highlights in several user videos but I have not received a clear answer about it. I often do dance recitals and light conditions can be very challenging so I need a camera that can cope and by the first looks I see on internetvideos it doesn't look very promising. I read that the hpx250 deals better with this.

master ped +2 or higher
gama, cine like D
these two should do the trick

DSR 1 (use this only if u have some extreme spot lights or out door or else it will add more noise to the shadow area)

remember to under expose a bit in most conditions
i think with these three setting enabled, its the best u can do with AC160/130 to prevent blowing out highlights, u can lower the saturation to prevent blown colors

I also do most of my work only in Stage Performances. However I use a 250, still the same issues as you. Because of severe lighting changes on the fly I purchased 2 controller units. I on my right for just zoom and the other on the left for just focus and iris. I also bought a marshall monitor 7 inch and I mostly have it set to peaking and try to keep my color in pink on the faces then switch every so often to check focus. I preset F1 to peak and F2 for focus on the monitor. Works well, however I also need to run DRS on 2 (different on the 250) and auto iris on -2. I at times still blow out when there are allot of people on stage and the back of the stage is blown out and the front is too low. I find that if at all able to get there for the practice run and have the light run so I can get close to what I will need. Sometime it works sometimes it dosent. I just did a high school show and all was good then they dropped the lights so low I almost couldn't see the stage with my eyes, I bumped up the gain however I couldn't rest the camera because I was already recording, so I just grinned and beared it till the lights got brighter (1 stage spot worked the other was half burned out so you had to split the iris). I can say I just bought a 21 inch monitor ( Sony LMD-2110W) for post work (its their entry level display, fit my budget for now). However the 7 inch marshall is nice, but I think I will be taking the 21 inch to my next performance and use it for focus (just need a bigger table) as my eyes are getting weaker as the cameras get better. to me stage work of any type with lights is rough as the mood changes so does the lighting, and I want to keep that mood going just tough because what you may see is not what you will see later in post. Hope it works well for you and just keep playing with settings. I read Barry book late at night and play with the camera after I did a shoot to see what I can make better and easier, I always get a little better each time I practice.

Does the "spotlight" mode still work pretty well on the ac130/160 and hpx250?
I've had good luck with that on dvx100b and dvc60.

Thanks, this is all very good input! I will be shooting again Wednesday night, right now I am going to start experimenting with these settings. Great input!

its under costom sw mode, u can only have three costom switches on ac160/130
works pretty good

Hi Guys

Spotlight mode can only be allocated to a user button..if you go into the menu to set user buttons you will find spotlight listed..it doesn't have any menu option..!!

Sorry to derail this a little, but what do we generally think (those of you who've used it) about the Sony LMD-2110W mentioned above? I see it's $900, 21", and has some pro features. However, it's marketed as "entry-level" (what makes this entry level, exactly?), and some reviews praise it (one guy even says he uses it for color correction for a cable show), while several say it's no good for HD monitoring.

I do a lot of stage work with the 250. I run a manual focus and iris while utilizing the waveform on the LCD. The waveform is the best way for me to accurately judge the exposure and (for me) it works very well.

Just a FYI, I just got one because I needed something for editing other than my monitor. It handles colors well, what I mean is you can correctly set it so you can check your levels. What I am not really pleased with is the HD quality, even with the camera connected direct its ok, not as sharp as I would like make my video look like its poor quality. So with that I its the only sub $1000 monitor out there and believe me I have been looking even used and couldn't find one for this price. So I am still happy for what I spent, I will be saving my pennies for a much better monitor in the future (about 300000 pennies to be more exact). I needed a video monitor and it fits my bill for now.
