Recommended kit for the EVA1

woot.

How would this new battery Core SWX Nano-VBR98

98wh (7.4v, 13200mah)

compare to Gripper GR-75 Lithium-Ion Battery:

75Wh (14.4V, ???mah, Supports up to 7A Draw)
* couldn't find mah?

Sorry if the specs make this obvious, but, how do they compare in terms of ability to power gear (12v d-tap output VS 14.4v of Gripper? 75 vs 98 watt? mah unknown?).

How long might camera + an Atomos Shogun Inferno run off one of these? Or, camera + Gractical Eye?

Sony NP970s are around 48wh so two powering the inferno should be comparable. Inferno is up to 10-33W. But you have to factor the EVA’s power needs at 19W so I would guess around 1.5 to 2 hrs inferno + EVA

I think Gratical takes 5W so 3 to 4hrs with EVA.

Video devices Pix-E5 is only 12-15W

One battery mounts in the camera, one does not.

One is 98w, one 75w (1/3 more power).

One is dual-voltage to directly power the camera, one powers everything via P-Tap.

CoreSWX battery’s P-Tap can only output 2amp, about 24w. Don’t know what the Gripper’s P-Tap max is.

**Just checked, the Gripper 75w batteries two P-Taps are rated for 7amps at 14.4v. So about 100whr draw for 40 minutes to suck that thing dry at full tilt. If you need to pull a lot of juice the CoreSWX battery is not for you. If you need to pull a modest amount of power and want to keep your kit tiny without accessory plates & batteries then CoreSWX is an option for you. Gripper is nice for minimizing parts hanging off camera even when powering a lot of items.

Thanks Mitch.

How does mah play into that, or how is it converted from watts/amps/voltage?

Not having worked with larger cameras and power draw on accessories before, I am not what sort of limitations I might expect with pieces of kit i have not yet considered yet in terms of what a 12v vs 14.4v cap might limit me with, or when I might need to supply 7amps vs 2amps.

You simply need to find out what accessories you might wish to use and how much power they draw. W=AxV. From there the rest is basic math.

Nice! New battery looks promising. Now EVA+Zacuto Gratical Eye could be lightweight doc camera finally!

basic question here, any reason to opt against thin 3G-SDI cables from either Convergent Design or SmallHD? I need 2 to go from EVA1 to Atomos for 4k 60p, and eventual RAW, correct?

Any better or more future proof cable solutions or are these still the go tos?

In my experience, thin SDI cables (no matter how good the quality) are much more likely to short or come apart... Buy them in pairs (for each connection) and always keep the backup handy. If your mounting config allows or benefits from using 90 degree connectors, use those. Any slight cable strain is the number one cause of death for these. Regardless, they do a really great job of cutting down cable clutter. However, I wouldn't use these types of cables on a recorder that I am not monitoring 100% while shooting.

Also, not sure, but you may need at least 6G-SDI for RAW, maybe even 12G? (check the specs on your device).

I was wondering that, shocker, but, haven't actually purchased SDI cables before. Are there 3G, 6G, and 12G - and should I just buy 12G from the get go?

Always a backup, check.

Shogun Inferno SDI input takes up to 12G. Not sure what EVA1 SDI output specs are, but you're only talking about a few bucks more for 12G cables. Might as well go with those.

Unless you're using them on a Steadicam or gimbal, I wouldn't use "thin" cables in the field. They are not tough enough for field use. One of my clients used to rent F900 packages for us to shoot with back in the early 2000's for a specialty show. Since these were the early days of HD, everyone was always very careful with what they used, spec wise. The cables the rental house sent out were high-specced, high-quality, expensive cables, BUT they were very thin and designed mostly for installation use. They were constantly tangling, being broken and pulled apart(cable from the connector), even with careful use.

I actually get Markertek to build my cables using Canare cable and Canare "fat" SDI connectors. I started using them probably a decade ago to build them and I don't believe I've had a single cable fail.

We used a thin cable (from Convergent Design) for about a year with the FS700 and the Odyssey 7Q.
We never had any issue.

The normal, thicker cables always got in the way if you didn't fix them on the camera, what again caused other problems.
I'd recommend the thin cables but would always bring a spare one in my bag.

Connection between FS700 & O7Q is 3G. Connection between EVA1 & O7Q is 6G.

Go for the bigger capacity cable. Like chicken soup, it couldn't hurt.

when I search for a 12g sdi cable on B&H I get pretty limited results and many are very long. Any links to specific cable suggestions? Apologies if this is basic (maybe you buy longer length and cut the cables?).

If you want options, go to Markertek. They will build custom cables(as well as having lost of "stock" options). I use them for pretty much all of my SDI cables and a mix of Markertek and Trew for custom audio cables.
