I'm gonna be investing in an EVA1 over xmas period,
currently looking at additional kit - I want to keep the body as light as possible,
appreciate any advice on kitting it out from existing users, planned kit list below:

EVA + Zacuto Z-HP-VCTB Bundle + Zacuto EVA1 Z-Finder + Sigma Art 18-35mm f/1.8

I have an Edelkrone monitor arm, guessing this will be ok to fix the monitor/z finer to?

also need pointers on good quality 3rd party batteries and SD Cards
mainly hand held/tripod corporate work

Cheers

Luke

I would second this request as well. Recoil Rig has my attention, but I am also considering Atomos Shogun Inferno, but want to keep my rig as small and light as possible (yeah, a Shogun Inferno? I know... but 4k/60p 10-bit and RAW are really important for some use cases).

Luke, a few thoughts:

Hang tight for the SWIT batteries for EVA1. They have a d-tap plug on them and you can power accessories such as an external monitor and Gratical Eye, etc. right from the standard size batteries (no AB/V-Mount). I emailed SWIT and they confirmed they will announce end of December, ship January.

Edelkrone Monitor Arm - I have this too. I don't think you'll want to use it to replace the standard arm on the EVA1 as it's pretty good.... but I'm guessing you could (I haven't looked at mine to try, and have not felt a desire). The Z-finder I believe will also work with the stock setup on EVA1.

3rd party SD cards I would hang tight a little longer or minimize your investment right now as prices are still quite high. Angelbird, Delkin, Adata, Panasonic are the v90 SD cards I know of currently.

Your kit sounds good, I tried the 18-35 on EVA1 and it's solid just limited IMO personally. On M43 speedbooster it's essential a 1.4x crop on that lens, giving it a 25-50 focal length. EVA1 is a 1.55x crop. It's similar but you're now dealing with a 28-54 zoom range. Still good, but I feel it's barely wide (those 3mm make a difference!). So, you might also consider a wider zoom (ART 12-24 comes to mind).

QUESTION

Regarding the Recoil Rig + Shogun Inferno:

If I power this from the aforementioned SWIT batteries (standard size) and thus have no AB/V-Mount battery counterweight, and then attempt to use the Shogun Inferno forward mounted on the EVA1/Recoil Rig (so that I am using the Inferno monitor as my LCD, in front of my face, while the EVA1 is on my shoulder) - is this a really unbalanced rig? The Inferno would have no batteries on it, being powered from the SWIT battery and all (but also no rear mounted heavy battery for counterweight) however my fear is I'd be really forward heavy with a 3lbs Milvus lens and a Shogun Inferno out in front of my face?

Good point on the SWIT's, I'll wait for them.
I'm used to shooting with the Olympus 12-35, 40-150 on the AF101, any 2 zooms for the EVA that will give me similar coverage?
Re:Monitor Arm, yeah if I can mount the Z Finder using the stock EVA setup even better/lighter..

You can calculate that by:

AF100 2x Crop...

12-35 = 24-70
40-150 = 80-300

EVA1 1.55x Crop...

18-35 = 28-54
24-70 = 37-98

(Some will complain about use of the word "crop" at all as S35 is cinema standard. However, when comparing M43 to S35 to speedboosters to FF oriented glass, I find it's helpful to forget your anti-canon feelings on the word "crop" and just use SOMETHING as a baseline to compare. I find using FF as the baseline works easiest, mathematically, for sake of comparison).

So with this in mind, I don't know every lens on the market but you'll want to do some math to find something workable for you. Personally, I wouldn't worry about trying to match what you are used to shooting on the AF100. Let the past die. Kill it if you have to. Get what is best for your new setup, and move along.

ART 12-24, 18-35, 50-100 might be a good zoom setup.
Canon 16-35, 24-70, 70-200 might be a good zoom setup (especially since it sounds like you like to shoot long, the 70-200 zoom might be ideal).

Etc.

Get the best glass you can afford.

I own an Edelkrone EVF/Monitor arm and it would never make it onto a set with my gear....just gathering dust on the shelf...it will release and flop about at the worst moment possible. I would look at the various SmallRig EVF arms/brackets that mount to Nato rails instead...beautifully made and very affordable and easily sturdy enough to be used as a third contact point for using the cam on your shoulder.

Good to know about SWIT! I was about to buy their existing battery and settle for the DC version. IDX has one with DTAP but I hear some batteries are loose on the EVA1. I dont want to lug my vmount batteries if possible.

Save your sanity and time, forget about it. I wasted too much of both trying to do this, and its really not a runner. The Shogun has to be waaaaaay forward to be able to use it properly or you'll go cross-eyed, which at that point even without its own batteries and a V mount way out behind you, is still too front heavy and also has enough leverage to make the whole rig side heavy. Forget about magic arms etc for this as well, they'll move everytime, you're talking rods, clamps, rosettes etc to keep that type of extension steady. I think I've shares in Small Rig at this stage after trying out that stunt !

Best way I can see, is to mount the Shogun up on the top plate or handle, V Mount off the back ( you're kidding yourself trying to power the Shogun any other way ), and use the new Zacuto hood they've brought out for the EVA 1 ( then no need of extra power cables ), this keeps the rig compact and should balance heavy lenses easily. If you've got the bucks, the Gratical Eye is great, but needs power.

That's the conundrum with the EVA 1. In order to use it in the way that many of you want to, you end up turning a super small, light camera into a big, heavy clunky rig. I went down the same route with the C200, but now I am shooting it stripped down using the built in Cinema RAW Light, no handle, grip only, using the stock EVF and touchscreen. External 7" recorders like the Shogun, IMHO, belong on big digital Cinema cameras or only when tripod shooting. If you are shooting narrative, commercials or music videos, rock on, but if you are shooting handheld, cradled or shoulder mounted, hanging a big, bulky Shogun with a couple of cables coming out of it, off of a tiny camera like this is not a viable way of working IMHO.

Thank you for the input, it's good to hear it straight.

And I guess to power the shogun I'd burn through SWIT batteries at light speed, eh?

I have been eyeing the z-finder even though it's no gractical. It's cheap, its light, its super simple.

Perhaps I could do the $1500 EVA1 Recoil Rig + Z-Finder kit, and then mount the Shogun in the rear, or top, of the camera with no use of the screen. Can you simply power off the Shogun screen and still use it as an external recorder, with a lower battery drain that would suit being powered off a SWIT battery? Or does the screen, and thus high power draw, have to be on? If I could turn it off I could even mount it toward the rear as a quasi counterweight.

I guess what I really want is someone to make an updated, dedicated, SDI/HDMI input SSD recorder only with no screen. Small, light, bolt on.

I could get the gratical eye, but the problem is it doesn't give me any external recording... so then I'd need a gratical AND a Shogun, and now weight + power is soaring upwards... and it's back to v-mount batteries, gratical eye, shogun inferno... and right in the situation puredrifting just mentioned.

Shogun is gonna need a V Mount or something similar with lots of juice, it will drive you nuts otherwise. The Zacuto rig is very nice but you can do a shoulder rig for a LOT less bucks, that Z finder is a good option for the EVA1 screen though. I really like the Shogun, the screen when you need it is great, and the recording is the icing on the cake.

”I guess what I really want is someone to make an updated, dedicated, SDI/HDMI input SSD recorder only with no screen. Small, light, bolt on.”

You can for HD (not 4K) it is called a BM Hyperdeck Shuttle, uses SSD, and has SDI and HDMI inputs.

I don't know about Swit, but another manufacturer will have a product shortly after the start of the new year. Within a few weeks, I believe.

I understand, you can not really talk about it, but I am ordering Equipment middle of January and I am looking into a way to power EVA1 and a big monitor (shogun or maybe even SmallHD 703). So far there are either the Swit and idx Batteries with the extra output or maybe the mini V-Lok from hawk-woods. Would you be able to tell us the voltages to expect with the mysterious manufacturer you are hinting at? And if it is a lightweight option?
Thanks ;)

Dominik

One thing I have yet to see is an extender arm for the grip handle - that uses the Panasonic bayonet design on both ends and would hopefully be able to adjust on the camera end as well. Looking for something that will attach directly to camera -- though I suppose a couple of Pana Bayonet to Arri Rosette adapters might do the trick also. They would have the added benefit of being able to attach the grip more or less directly to a tripod pan handle if desired.

Anyone have eyes (or future vision) on these options?

I’ve asked about this, myself. However, as far as adapters for EVA1 handgrip bayonets to Arri rosettes go, Wooden Camera is releasing one pretty soon.

Again it is not my place, but I believe the info should be public before then. The manufacturer is in production now so that stock is available at announcement.
