C100: Recommendations: Monitor/Recorder for C100

So I'm long overdue for a external Recorder/Monitor for my C100 MK1. I had an eye on the new BMD Video Assist, wich was demoed a couple days ago in my town. Big disappointment. The Video Assist does not recognize the C100 Timecode and Rec-Trigger over HDMI (just like the Hyperdeck Shuttle). "Canons fault", said the BMD-Guy. OTOH Atomos Ninja Blade does recognize both Timecode and Rec-Trigger and seems to work perfectly fine with the C100. Since its price was lowered it would be my new first choice... What are your experiences with the combo C100/Ninja Blade? How reliable is it to record on HDD/SSD (eg outdoor, in cold conditions)? Are there any downsides (like the missing magnitude)? Are there any comparable alternatives price and size-wise? Any information and recommendation is highly appreciated!

At $495 usd both are priced same. However, if you don't have the Record trigger and timecode why will you buy the BMD? The ninja blade will solve your problems.

I am waiting for the Sound Devices Pix-E7. Wondering when actually it will be available in quantities as I haven't prebooked. Convergent Design guys just made the Odyssey more exciting by opening up another frontier with Apollo. Wish there was an option to mirror it to an ipad so that the large screen would have been easily used for switching.

Can't go wrong with the Ninja Blade. I have it and love it! The only thing that I think is missing is the 1:1 zoom. But otherwise, it's fantastic!

Well, that's why I called the Video Assist a disappointment. And as I wrote the Ninja Blade is indeed my favored option. Thing is I never worked with it or another Recorder using HDDs or SSDs. I don't know how reliable they are outside studio conditions, hence this thread...
The PIX-E7 is too big for my needs but the PIX-E5 could be an option. I just don't see what could justify the higher price when used with a C100. I have no need for 4K or 60p, the 1080p Screen is nice to have but not crucial for me...

Thanks for the reply! So you never experienced problems by using SSDs or HDDs (dropped frames, failures due to cold temperatures or anything like that)?

I have the Ninja Blade too. After using it over a year now I get depressed at the thought I would ever have to use the memory card again. The HDD is so easy to transfer your files. I have two 500 gig HDD's (I forget which one) but they work flawlessly. I image quality is fantastic like an iPhone. The only thing that concerned me was the Blade gets really hot after continuos use, I went to remove the HDD after a long shoot and I almost couldn't touch it........ but there was absolutely no problem with the files. I would image an SSD would run cooler.

This is what I hoped to read. Thank you Mr. Thames!

I had the Ninja Blade and it's pretty good but the Assassin size is so much better. The tools are very good. I use the 7Q+ as a monitor on a light stand a ton. I don't leave home without it. If you shoot handheld a lot then the size would probably be to big without a proper rig.

I had a look at the Assasin too but it's too big for my needs as I do shoot handheld a lot. So it seems Ninja Blade is the way to go for me... Thanks a lot for your feedbacks.
One last question: is there a way to change file-naming on Atomos devices? I like how the Canon Data Import Utility creates a file-name based on Date and Timecode (it's actually the only reason I use it for import before converting the files to ProRes with ClipWrap). I find naming-conventions like Clip 1, Clip 2 etc. really annoying when managing media outside of FCPX-Libraries...

Just to chime in in case anyone was still considering the BMVA with a C100... Not only does it not have trigger rec but it doesn't recognize the frame rate either. HUGE disappointment. If BM could fix the frame rate and trigger rec, I could live with the inaccurate color and limited adjustment ability, but as it is? No way. The only thing it has going for it is resolution.

Michi, you can change the files names once you plug the HHD into the computer. I've never tried it just on the Blade...... maybe you can.

The file names on the Ninja Blade include a prefix (NINJABLD) and then Scene Number, Shot Number and Take Number. The Scene and Shot numbers can be changed.

Thanks Guys for helping me make a decision. I do appreciate. Ninja Blade it will be...
