Hello all,
I have been immersed in reading here for the last few days, and have a few questions for this experienced audience.
I am a relatively experienced film-maker and videographer and use FCP7, with Cinema tools, but up until now I have been using a pair of HMC-152 cameras on all recent productions. I have been using ClipWrap for the AVCHD files.
We have over 70 clips up on YouTube; see HERE.
I have bought the GH2, 25/1.4 and 14/2.5 lenses because my work now has me on the road much of the time, and a small, light, rig is critical. Usually I record second system sound and voice over from the desktop.
I am shooting footage for instructional videos; some appear on YouTube, and some as downloadable products; the subject is strengthening and flexibility work, and human movement optimisation. I mention all this because 720p/25 is all we have needed to use so far. For all conceivable delivery methods, 720p will do very well. We are not going for the 24fps look that many here use; I have to say there's zero art in what we do, but clarity of the video is important, and the decent handling of human-speed movement is essential.
Most footage is shot from a tripod, but recommendations for hand-holding are very welcome. We have been using one of the HMC-150s hand-held on a wide-angle setting and even though that camera has no image stabilisation, the footage is very useable, but the form factor of the GH-2 does not lend itself to body-bracing the way the HMC does (and we have a RedRock micro setup for it too).
We need decent slow-motion for a forthcoming project, but not really fast frame rates: I need to see what happens in the feet when we walk and run barefoot, and how the body sets itself up for jumping.
My GH2 is a US version, so I am assuming it will shoot 720p/60 and, further, I am assuming it is a true 60fps. Is this so?
And looking through the manual, it looks as though the SH 720p/60 (17Mbps) is the setting to use. Would folk here recommend a mix of 60fps for the slo-mo and 30fps for the pieces to camera, and the rest of the normal speed footage?
So, with all that as the setting of the scene, what are your recommendations? And is there a hack that folks recommend that would be a practical improvement on the unhacked camera for the purposes described (perhaps to get better 720p and faster frame rates), or am I better off to just go with the standard camera?
All responses gratefully received.
