Recommendations for professional sound package for Canon T21

I'm not down on ML at all, all I'm saying is that most T2i users aren't willing to risk a "hack" , that is a reflection on the users, NOT ML.

I do agree that the ML "Hack" (and that is what it is), does offer several useful tools. however it doesn't change the fact that were discussing the AUDIO portion of a T2i not ISO or zebras.

and no matter how you paint it, with the T2i, separate audio IS the best way to go for film making.

safe? well that is relative to the technical capabilities of the user.

try to get it fixed under warranty after one gets turned into a brick after a failed attempt at the "hack" , then the poor user is out his very valuable hard earned cash. that is what will keep a lot of people from "hacking" their T2i.

those are the very real fears of people not willing to risk their new shiny $800 film making dream tool. whether its relatively safe or not , the "hack" voids manufacturers warranty.

and Im not trying to be down on ML at all, its an option , NOT the best solution (for audio)

Thanks to everyone that has taken the time to respond to my post, I have been learning a lot. I plan on spending several months, possibly several trips in Buenos Aires shooting one or many Tango documentaries, shooting interior and exterior interviews and live action Tango dancing. Buenos Aires can be a dangerous place to shoot exteriors and I want to have very lightweight inconspicuous gear. There is always the possibility that someone will grab your camera and run off, or it could be stolen in any number of ways. I want the freedom to shoot at a moment's notice. Mostly planning on being a one man crew, but should be able to find an assistant when needed. Do I have to worry about compatibility of radio frequencies with equipment that I buy in the States? I think I saw on a video that someone from Sennheiser said that they don't ship outside of the US. Do I have to buy the equipment before I leave for Argentina? The Magic Lantern to wireless Sennheiser solution sounds simple and effective, and the video test sounded great, http://vimeo.com/18489831. Someone wrote that a member named OP had some trouble with ML, can anyone elaborate on the pros and cons of Magic Lantern. What is meant by hacked in? Once I program my Rebel T2i with ML can I remove it if I don't like it? A couple of people have recommended the Sony ecm44 lav. Does that go straight into the camera and will I still need Magic Lantern to turn off the AGC? How do you purchase ML and have do you install it?

You really need to read up more on it before attempting to use it.

First of all, Magic Lantern is free. It is a non-canon hack created by users for users. You can watch a brief history from the creators here: http://vimeo.com/7838475
Here's their Wikia page for the 550D/T2i version: http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/550D/UserGuide
And PLEASE, before doing anything with it, at least glance through the forum topic on it: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?218686-Magic-Lantern-for-550D-in-progress!

Since it is a work in progress, nothing is guaranteed 100%. There are new builds coming out every few days with more tweaks/fixes/etc. I'm currently using the audiomon build found here, and have had good results with it:
http://groups.google.com/group/ml-d.../32bb7b314123b754?show_docid=32bb7b314123b754

But PLEASE READ UP ON IT FIRST. This is a hack to make the camera do things it was not designed to do. Whenever you play with these kinds of things, you always run the risk of possibly damaging your camera.
Also, there is no one here named "OP" to my knowledge, however the term is used across message boards to refer to "Original Poster". In this case, I believe YOU are the OP of this thread. Perhaps you found a thread where someone discussed their problem with ML. I don't know. The only damage I ever read about was from someone who used the wrong version of the software (like, for a canon 5D instead of t2i or something), and it royally messed everything up.

Thanks for taking the time to educate a newbie. If you are ever in Buenos Aires, I'll give you a free Tango lesson.

Sweet! My wife and I actually took a couple of lessons around here in NY... Only thing keeping us from doing more is the $$ they charge around here for it! ;)

Que Bueno! I am currently watching Ric Burns documentary "New York". I think I may visit there to check out the Tango scene someday. I currently spend 3 or 4 months a year in Buenos Aires and come back to work for 8 months to pay for the next trip. If I do get to New York, I'll look you up.

The Tascam dr-680 records great quality audio. Now with the 1.2 firmware you can even group stereo mic inputs, so you can adjust the gain of several channels with the one nob at the same time.

Didn't get MS-Stereo decoding to work yet that is supported since 1.2.

The drawback is the high power consumption. Eight rechargeable batteries that power a sennheiser wireless system for 10 hours, runs the tascam dr-680 for about one hour. you have to bring quiet a lot of batteries to a full day of shooting.

The adjustment of the gain requires to enter into the trim menue. But in the trim menue you get only a small representation of the level-bars. To monitor the sound properly you therefore have to leave the trim menue. Everytime you want to adjust the gain, you have to enter the trim menue again. I wish, you could adjust gain in normal view. Maybe even with the level-bars horizontally over the screen to gain some size for them.

The phone know already has a slack joint after about 5 days of shooting.
